Appearance: Deep black with a small frothy tan head. Aroma: WTF??? Harry warned me but my God... It’s an IPA! No wait, there is some burned malt in there, but wow, that is unique. Flavour: Creamy, silky hoppy and malty, some peppermint? So smooth, a lovely coffee bitter finish, simply superb! GMCC2181 (886), Bear/Elkton, Delaware, USA

A little disappointed but for a dry stout it is not that bad... Light black in color with a small head. It was a light stout. Malty and sugar thrown in. Just to light for my liking... Thanks again Bruce for sharing. mnurda (439), Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | May 6, 2008 Bottled sample from the brewery. Shared it with Piscator. We were a bit stressed at the lack of bublles at the start of puring, but the carbonation was perfect. Surprisingly hopped for a stout. Great beer. beerguy101 (3972), Newark, California, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 4, 2008 Tasted at the April Northern California Beer Tasting. This stout poured a dark black color from a 22oz bottle. Small to medium sized tan foamy head. The aroma is coffee, chocolate and a touch of diacetyl. Medium bodied stout. The malts are burnt malt, chocolate and coffee. The hops are piney and resinous. Kind of weird in an imperial stout. Decent balance. Good carbonation. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. mgoy (343), Oak Brook, Illinois, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 2, 2008 Updated: May 5, 2008Graduation weekend in Bloomington. Three Floyds Black Sun Stout is a deep black beer with a nicely formed brown head. The aroma is present, but with lighter characters than expected. This is a very viscus stout in nature, but not watery in taste. While this is a winter brew for Three Floyds, the flavor and finish are light enough to enjoy year round. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Apr 28, 2008 Pours a very dark mahogany brown color with a dissipating, foamy tan head. Soapy, sudsy sheeting slowly droops down the glass, leaving minimal spotting behind. The nose is as hoppy as a stout can possibly be, with crushing pine and spruce notes dominating what seems to be a roasty, chocolate and coffee background. The flavor is just as hoppy, with pine resin overpowering the malty elements. Baker’s chocolate and espresso come through in the background, but serve more as afterthoughts to the intense bitterness. The mouthfeel is substantial, but very dry and overly carbonated. Kind of chalky feeling. Overall, it seems as though the intense hopping is an attempt at covering up numerous flaws within the brew. Its just too damn hoppy for the style. I’m not a big fan. badlizard (2418), Berkeley, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 27, 2008 bottle from archerliqours. Black with a creamy tan head. Dark chocolate and citrus hops aroma. Dark bitter chocolate, mild coffee notes, and an aggressive hoppiness. 17thfloor (1526), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Apr 26, 2008 Pours a near-black brown with a thin fine tan head. Typical Three Floyd’s hop aroma accompanied by large dry roasted coffee malt. Very light bodied...a little bit crunchy =) with sophisticated carbonation. Its always good to see a dry stout that is actually dry...ha! Coffee malt, fresh hops, and some caramel malt maybe. Easy drinking stout...and I mean it this time.. understated flavors. This is my prelude to DLD 08! cya in a few hours =)
