crowderm (154), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Mar 31, 2008 Pours a deep, pitch black with a minimal, but stubborn mocha head. Very interesting aroma for a stout - some of the familiar notes are there in the form of chocolate and subtle dark fruits, but these are covered up by a peppery hop aroma. The flavor is starts bitter-sweet with some nice coffee and dark chocolate notes, and finishes nicely bitter and dry with the spicy hops taking over (although I must say that there is a lingering milk chocolate sweetness on the tongue once the hops have faded). The mouthfeel is a little pit prickly for a stout, but works given the dry spicy flavors of the brew. A solid stout, and pretty unique given the intense hop flavor/aroma present, but not the best I’ve tasted.
shintriad (655), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 11, 2008 Perfect head, thick with tiny bubbles forming slowly. Smooth, espresso-scented, hella hoppy for a stout, with a bit of sweetness in the finish. Thick mouthfeel. Yes, this is great. SuzyGreenberg (799), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 10, 2008 22 oz. bottle - thanks to SQNfan for the trade; jet black and oily texture; frothy chocolate-colored head settles quickly; lots of coffee on the nose and some sweetness too; roasty and mild fruit flavors present; flavors are slightly on the mild side with touch of bitterness; dry finish and very nice overall with a good combo of sweetness and bitterness from the chocolate and coffee badbeer (391), Iowa, USA Jul 5, 2008 Poured deep black color with a brown head that left excellant lacing. Smell is incredible, piney hops come right through, paired with some roastiness and cocoa. I wouldn’t normally expect so much hoppyness in a dry stout, but it paired wonderfully. Taste of coffee and cocoa paired with a wonderful piney hoppyness. Mouthfeel had medium carbonation and medium body, very dry finish. I love this, and even with the steep price tag, I will and did pick up more. Definitely worth trying.
This review is from multiple bottles from 2005. This past years version did not seem to be as good. kimcgolf (656), Dacula, Georgia, USA Jul 1, 2008 Poured to a jet-black with medium thick tan head hat lingered well thru mid-glass and left okay lacing. Nose was a pleasant chocolate-caramel malt with hints of earth scents as well. The mouthfeel of this medium-bodied beer was full and somewhat sweet, and the taste accentuated the chocolate-caramel of the nose. Alcohol never did make itself known, which at 5.25 is not surprising. Finish was sustained and pleasant. A pretty good stout. QHopjunky (8), , Indiana, USA does not count Jun 12, 2008 I love this beer. One of the most complex lighter stouts i have had...More hop aroma and flavor than any other light stout i have had, also hints of fruit, especially cherries...my only real knock is that is a little thin and has lower ABV, but that is really nitpicking
