On tap at Lunar Brewing Co., and snifter served showing a black/brown hue, with a 1/2 " layer of frothy, tan head foam that turned persistently rocky, leaving lacing that was wavy to curtainy spray on the glass. The nose was quite resinous & piney at first, then showed roastiness, cocoa, some sweetness, and hints of earthiness & wood, after settling a bit. Full bodied, with soft carbonation, the taste continued the roast & cocoa, included moderate resinous & earthy bitterness, some sticky & syrupy texture, mellow warmth, and modest creaminess to the mouthfeel. Pricey pour, but gradually found it a fair investment after each tasty sip.

Bottle. Pours in black oily body with medium tan head. Aroma is roasty, chocolaty, toffee and caramel. Taste has a pretty strong pine bitterness with a strong creamy chocolate sweetness to balance it out. Little bit acidic in the after taste, some vanilla in the finish. Body is full, medium carbonation.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
My Bottom Line:
Molasses and mild roast build a pancake around this big brew’s bursting resinous hops, leading to green hop bitterness and a burnt sugar aftertaste.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam skirts the blackness.
-Alcohol is well hidden.
-Flavor profile is balanced in the intensity.
-Mouthfeel is surprisingly not too heavy.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: DEC 6, 2015 Pitch black, bright orange head. The aroma is hop-forward - fresh and bright citrus hops, sweet citrus, some pine. Chocolate, big sweet malts and berries. Taste: sweet chocolate with lots of zesty hops, some licorice. Full-bodied, yet not sticky and drinkable. One of the best beers I’ve had.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
APPEARANCE - it would indeed blot out the sun.
NOSE - hoppy - that’s it.
FLAVOR - hoppy. As it warms up, and the flavor builds on me I get some stout flavorings and depth at the end of the sip.
NOTES - feels and tastes like a super big black IPA. Not at all what I expected from an ’imperial ipa’. It’s a good beer, but different than advertised. I cannot wait for 5 years from now when I try the bottle I put in my cellar.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, fully lasting.
Body is dark brown to black (non-opaque, flashlight tested).
Aroma is moderately malty (dark chocolate, caramel, roasted grain), moderately hoppy (grapefruit), with a note of vanilla.
Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic.
Thankfully this bottle sample is nothing like the draft I had in Louisville earlier this year, which was all body odor, a horrible batch/keg. This sample has a simple but enjoyable nose, primarily chocolate and grapefruit...smells like a hoppy porter more than an Imperial stout. Sweet in the mouth as you might expect but balanced well enough to drink. No off notes and a velvety mouthfeel, so yeah...it’s a solid brew but not very exciting and the name doesn’t make much sense since it’s pretty far from a "motor oil" kind of appearance. Enjoyable but not particularly noteworthy.

black, firm tan head. Aroma is quite hoppy, roasty with pine notes. Long bitter finish. Really hoppy for the style. Some notes of liquorice. Quite nice
