Snifter pour on tap at the brewpub (Munster, IN). A RIS of the hoppy variety. Pours a deep blackish hue, dark and thicker, opaque body with some legs on the swirl. Some dark brownish glow further into the beer. Frothy tannish head dies to a ring and laces small. Aromas show a melange of black malts, toasty and cararmel elements, kiss of roast but a touch more toards fruit and some dark plum. Firm citrusy and resiny hopping shows up. Grapefruit, florals, and grass. Pine, more grapefruit, and fruity hops. Initial mirrors this, firm fuller body gives a faster rip towards an overwhelming citrusy and fruity hop melange, blast of good bitterness. Rich bitterness, gumball, and grapefruit. Orange and florals, bubblegum. Middle shows some thicker dark malts, black, caramel, gentle roast and dark fruit that melds into a large fruity hop feel. Grapefruit, Amarillo hops, and florals. Backend remains bitter and hop centered, some toast, faint dash of cocoa as thickness dies off a bit. Richly hopped stout, firm thicker body, but a boatload of flavor and bittering hops rue the day here. Fun and a change of pace from their usual RIS. Aroma really gets better as it wamrs.

On tap at Three Floyd’s. Chocolate and black licorice along with a hefty hop punch. Light alcohol and moderate sweetness. Full body. Big and bold; quite drinkable.

On tap at the source. Glad that it was still on at this point... Pours a deeper cola deeper brownish black pour, a touch lighter at its edges, and topped with almost a non-existent head which looks almost still... Aroma has an initial burst of citrusy hops, green and piney as well to go with the previously mentioned. Stouty qualities with its chocolate and malt appeal come through as a second thought but still apparent with a touch of roast as well. Hops still seem to rule on this one... Flavors are more of the same with more if an added malt stouty sweetness that initially pairs up well with that green citrus hop component, a nice melding of sorts. Hops seem to takeover after the initial. Body doesn’t seem all that big, thick, cloying for such a strengthy brew. A bit of honey and dark fruit qualities develop late. Nice on a day such as this, very hop forward and recommended for that alone.

UPDATED: DEC 1, 2012 BA version of the Black Sun stout. Beautiful ebony pour with fluffy tan head. The nose is big bourbon and roasted malts. Coffee, chocolate, burnt grain, molasses, toffee, and brown sugar. Big (really big!) hop profile as well...which helps cut through the sweetness. Does not much resemble the dry stout base beer at all...Can I possibly have misunderstood the barman? Very drinkable and satisfying, with an exceptionally creamy texture. texture is somewhat thin for the style and somewhat resembles a hoppy black IPA or maybe even a porter. A real treat, whatever the hell it was supposed to be. Rerated 12/1/12: Of course, I obviously DID misunderstand the barman...This is a completely new Imperial stout, completely unrelated to any previous recipe and not barrel-aged a lick. Still enjoyed it greatly!

Lots of licorice, raisin in the nose... Dark black, light tan head... Tastes like a date, notes of dark fruit, raisin, and licorice... Great beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at source. Black pour/tan head. Poor retention/some lace. Aroma is tangerine/grapefruit, light chocolate/roast. Taste is sweet, chocolate, roast, quite bitter, orange candies, citrus. Palate is soft, oily, bitter finish. More of a black DIPA than imperial stout. Good.

Pour is very dark brown/close to black with a small tan head, nice lacing left on the glass. The nose is heavy on the roasted malts, light chocolate, caramel, and pine needle hops. Lots of hop and pine bitterness with an imperial stout backbone (chocolate, espresso, dark toast). Tastes kind of like an imperial black IPA.

UPDATED: FEB 3, 2013 Enjoyed on tap @ 3 Floyd’s with friends. Appearance is pitch black with a thin tan head. Aroma has a rich hop profile with huge chocolate and coffee notes, smells decadent. Taste is phenomenal. Awesome stuff.

On tap at FFF: pour is murky dark brown/black with a modest khaki head in.this snifter. The nose is heavy on the roast and pine, with subtle chocolate and caramel here. It reminds of alpha klaus, with a creamier mouthfeel. Anyway: more hop / pine bitterness, espresso, chocolate, cream, with some roast present as well. I suppose there is.a lingering booziness.near the finish, with some dark fruits at the end for me. This is a nice one, but not a mind blower for me
