4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 hopscotch (8242) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - APR 29, 2008
Draft... DLD ‘08... This beer rocks!... Tar black ale with a small, creamy, tan head. The aroma offers strong notes of espresso, chocolate and bourbon with a touch of vanilla. Oily and full-bodied with a silky-smooth mouthfeel and prickly carbonation. Burnt bitterness follows closely behind bourbony chocolate and vanilla sweetness. Whiskey-warm, chocolate and blackstrap finish. If ever there was a beer totally reconstructed by barrel aging, this is it!

Draft. Black color, brown head. Aroma of pure bourbon. Taste is more of the same. Too much bourbon, not enough beer.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 womencantsail (7100) - Garbage Grove, California, USA - DEC 9, 2012
Strong Ale 2012. Nice black pour with a khaki head. Fairly sweet aroma of vanilla, burnt sugar, and bourbon. Some oak, a lot of roasted malt, and a bit of licorice. Tastes a little bit watery, but good otherwise. Plenty of bourbon, vanilla, and sweet sugar. Chocolate, roasted malt, and a good deal of licorice. Some oak and a bit of cream.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 Rciesla (5499) - Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA - MAY 15, 2008
Draft at FFF, DLD. this was a huge score for me as i’m a big fan of the base beer. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma is bourbon, fruit, and chalky vanilla. The flavor was just that with some hop character but more so chocolate and bourbon. I loved this.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 BBB63 (5423) - La Porte, Indiana, USA - APR 27, 2008
DLD 2008, Bourbon (Barrel Aged) Black Sun Stout: Deep brown hue with a small fading head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of bourbon, vanilla, oak, coffee, earthy yeast esters, and a hint of herbal vapours. The taste has almost no hop bitterness versus the regular release with mostly coffee and dark malts taking center stage. The finish is a bit boozy and chalky. The mouth feel is medium-bodied with a smooth oily texture. It is okay enough I guess but I miss the hop character, too much coffee notes and that is saying a lot since I am a coffee drinker.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Cornfield (5276) - Oak Forest, Illinois, USA - MAY 4, 2008
It poured a deep brown body that at times looked black in the glass and had a slender tan head. The aroma had Bourbon, vanilla, roasted malts, licorice (or, was that from a drink I had earlier in the day?), and a woody bitterness. The Bourbon came through much stronger in the flavor, but a splash of runny chocolate also joined the fray and a mild hoppy bitterness finally introduced itself. Probably too light a beer for the BBA treatment, but not bad.

On draught at the brewery’s tap room during Dark Lord Days ’08. Pours an opaque near black as the Ace of Spades brew with a thin tan head that slowly dissipates to a fine film and tan ring. Aroma of toasted dark malt, some black malt, sweet bourbon, coconut, dark chocolate and some vanilla. Taste is full bodied, little carbonation with flavors of toasted dark malt, chocolate, some bourbon and vanilla with a fine hint of citrus zest. Finish is smooth with a dark chocolate, bourbon and vanilla aftertaste that slowly disappears. Another excellent bourbon aged beer from 3F.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 AmEricanbrew (4890) - Belcher, Louisiana, USA - MAY 6, 2008
Draft at DLD 2008. Black with a tan head. Big bourbon/oak vanilla aroma with dry blackened malts. Medium body with a very smooth slick mouthfeel. Great taste mirrors the aroma with sweet bourbon/vanilla mixing nicely with bitter chocolate and roasty blackened malt flavors. Liked this one more than the DL.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 deyholla (4854) - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA - JUL 1, 2010
On tap at Map Room. Poured black with a small brown head that dissipated to a film around the edges. Aroma was full of overwhelming bourbon with some sweet grains and a bit of dark fruit. Flavor again had a very strong bourbon note that overwhelmed the underlying sweet grains and dark fruit.

Draft shared by b3shine at DLD ’12- thanks again, Beau! Pours a deep, mostly opaque brown with a tiny tan ring for a head. Big bourbon barrel notes burst out of the aroma, balanced by the coffee and dry roastiness of the base beer. Notes of pine, dark chocolate, vanilla, and oak also back it up. Medium-bodied, with a smooth mouthfeel and modest carbonation. I like Black Sun a lot and this was a nice variation.
