Pours coffee with no head or lacing. Nose was quite soya. Tastes were big chili heat, some vanilla and some espresso. Not really getting the cognac. Taste was big spicy, my nose was running! Oily in the mouth with lots of carbonation.

Bottle shared with a bunch of folks. Smelled of bourbon. The hot pepper flavor really hits you right away. Very solid beer, just a little too hot for my taste.

A deep dark stout with no head. In aroma, bitter chocolate with soy sauce, chili, coffee grind, very herbaceous. In mouth, a superb sweet chocolate with thick soy sauce, pinot de charente, chocolate liqueur, and hot pepper in finish, muy mexicano. Xmas Ottawa gathering Dec 13 2013.

Opened at the 2013 end of year Ottawa tasting, #317 of 817 - thanks Sylvain! Viscous black pour with no head. Fresh green chilli peppers is the first aroma followed by charcoal, some coffee grinds, leather and burnt malts - very similar to an aged DL but with chilli added with a full body and mild+ carbonation, although on the finish it becomes surprisingly thin (for DL). Definitely an odd combination but very happy I got to try this.

Bottle, thanks Matt, part of a 12-14 variant tasting. Wow. Damn spicy. Even after 2 years. Sweet peppers. Thick darklord mouthfeel. FFF makes the best chilli stouts, and they need to make more.

Sample size at a killer bottle share. Bottle #28/817. Pours a flat-looking brown/black, with no head but some sizable alcohol legs on the glass. Nose is cognac-covered pepper-covered imperial stout, if that makes sense. Very sweet flavor, fairly bitter. Big bodied, slippery oily feel, soft action, and quite hot with chili peppers rather than alcohol. Kind of like drinking hot sauce. I thought this would be the ultimate hangover beer, because it’s like a combo of the hottest bloody mary with dark, rich black coffee. No more than a few ounces could be consumed, but goddamn it was fun.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a small dark brown foamy head with OK retention and some lacing. Aroma of dry roasted malt with quite a bit of residual sugar with some chili’s notes coming through. Taste is quite heavy with loads of dry roasted malt with some strong spicy chili’s notes that offset most of the residual sugars and barrel treatment. Body is full with medium carbonation and alcohol is totally hidden by the chili notes. Interesting experiment but I would like the head to be dropped a bit too increase drinkability.

Pours black with a spicy aroma. Taste is spicy but its not crazy with a sweet chocolate taste. Leaves a nice burn after.

750 ml bottle shared with the group at a special tasting in 2012 from notes. Pours dark brown to black in color with a small beige head. The aroma has ample sweet malts, vanilla, peppery heat, Cognac barrel influences, berries, some wood, chocolate and a light smoke. The flavor has much more spicy peppers than my bottle of regular de Muerte because we consumed this fresh. Sweet caramel malts, caramel, chocolate, peppery spice, Cognac barrel influences, berries, vanilla and a light splash of smoke. It’s amazing that the barrel aged versions turn out so much better than the base beer these days.
