4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 MAFountain (18) - Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA - MAY 25, 2012
22oz bottle. Nose is sweet, port, and peppers. The sweetness hits you right away on the tongue, giving way to a nice heat towards the back of the mouth. If you don’t like chili beers, this is not for you. If you don’t like port, then again not for you. Three Floyds nailed bringing the two together though. A favourite of mine for sure.

UPDATED: AUG 15, 2011 Draft on tap at Great Taste of the Midwest 2011 (Madison, WI). Pours a nice blackish opaque hue, dark and thicker, with just a tiny light bubbled head that dies to nothing. Aromas are a great peppery spice, rich chilies, touch of red wine, brandy, roast. Some cocoa, sweetnessn toast. Peppers really grow to dominate. Initial is medium bodied offering a really nice feel of peppers, chilies, cocoa, and roast. Red wine, deep, with oak and cocoa, roast, sweetness. The peppers grow with a fury, touches of heat and plenty flavors. Peppers and red wine are really working well together. Much better than Ronaldo. Great peppers isn’t overbearing, but gives great flavor. As a lover of De Muerte, this is top notch. Red wine gives a great layer. Mmmmmmm. I’d give regular De Muerte the edge though.

Draft at FoBAB 9. Pours a deep brown/black with a brown head. Nose is really nice. Smokey peppers, green pepper and chocolate and a bit of fruitiness. Some nice plum notes as well. Really nice nose. On tasting, the heat is in the front. Offers a nice bitter pepper note, smoke and chocolate, as well as the deep fruit notes. Really complex beer here and the port brings in another character. Offers some tart notes as well. Really great beer.

On tap at GTMW. One of my favorite beers of all time was the original Conquistador De Muerte, so when I saw this in the GTMW program I had to track this down. It was certainly worth waiting in the line. Dark brown/black pour with a thin tan head. Aroma of chocolate, mild heat, chillies, spice. Some wine barrel notes and mild fruity sweetness. Flavor is in your face chillies, strong chocolate and roast. Wet wood, overall sweetness from the port barrel. Quite impressive. Excellent. Awesome. Great beer.

Very chili forward beer. A very enjoyable beer for me, but I can see how it might be off-putting for some. Quite subtle port and brandy character-th chilies are the main character here. Lasting heat. Can’t remember who brought this for Hunanpu but I greatly appreciate the tick.

750 ml bottle shared by STLWill - thanks again, Will! I know like the Biggs’ Stache, I’ve been bugging you to break this one out for me. Bottle 155/217. Pours a coffee brown color with no head. Big coffee note, with peppers, dark and milk chocolate, toasted malts, dark fruits, cream, and port. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a spicy, fruity mouthfeel. Didn’t quite stand up to the Conquistador De Muerte to me, but I still enjoyed this very unique beer a lot.

This is a weird beer. Smells like a sour with stout characteristics and a lot of heat. Tastes like a fruit rollup with peppers. Such an unusual beer. It’s completely flat, but strangely compelling. I had it at the great taste and didn’t like it, but upon second review, it’s impressive. Unique and tasty. Not sure that I would want a large pour, but for a few ounces it’s nice. I’d drink it again.

FoBAB 2011. Not quite as good as the Muerte if I remember, but still good. Interesting spice. Aroma is slight bourbon, noticeable chile, and chocolate. You could taste the chiles, which left a little bit of spice. It was very interesting and very good.

Bottle shared by Meadme at Hunahpu’s day. Dark brown pour with a fleeting ran head. Huge spicy chili pepper finish. The front end is somewhat vinous. With a sweet lactose nose, this is one wacky beer...
