Bottle shared at my pad. Joan Jett black pour with a chocolate head. Huge bourbon aromas. This version, like the í10 DL in my opinion, is not thick and motor oil like as previous years. The taste was very sweet with lots of molasses, chocolate malts, vanilla, and very very muted bourbon flavors.

Sampled from a bottle at the Three Floyds XV anniversary. This was the one I was most excited about trying. Big, viscous pour with a tan head. Huge aroma of perfect bourbon. Notes of dark chocolate, caramel, cocoa and vanilla show up, as well as some espresso. Itís quite incredible what the barrel brings out in this one and its arguably one of the best smelling beers Iíve ever had the opportunity to have. This and BCS Rare, itís a toss up. Flavor is bourbony, lots of dark fruit and chocolate going on, as well as vanilla, cocoa, some oak and booze. Almost exhausting to drink because thereís so much going on. Full-bodied, lovely. Probably my favorite of the barrel-aged variants.

750mL bottle, #472/484, courtesy of wavers1. Thanks, buddy! Pours a deep, oily cola-brown color; a very thin perimeter of bubbles. Lots of vinous notes, dark chocolate, and a hugely rich bourbon character thatís neither harsh nor sticky-sweet. Warming, delicious bourbon notes, layers of caramel and chocolate, along with a vibrant alcohol and nicely placed core bitterness to make this actually pleasurable to drink (unlike, say, Black Tuesday). Yum. Very glad Dark Lord can still be delicious.

bottle courtesy of daveborn, thanks! had this side by side with whiskey Hunahpu, and was surprised to give this beer the slight edge with less cloying and a slightly more balanced palate. tons of bourbon there, and its really good. maybe the barrels are magical if it can make dark lord this good.

Bottle...This beer rocks!... Pitch black ale with a mid-sized, creamy, light brown head. Great retention. The woody, boozy nose presents big bourbon, oak and a whisper of vanilla. Full-bodied and chewy with lively carbonation. The flavor is flooded with bourbon and offers gobs of chocolate, light molasses, espresso and a touch of coconut. Finishes bold, burnt and boozy. Thanks go out to 50belair for sharing this world class beer!

Bottle. Courtesy of Andrew, thanks man! Pours a pitch black color with a light tan head. Molasses, caramel, bourbon but pretty slight aroma. Heavy mouthfeel. Vanilla, molasses, caramel, roast, dark chocolate, and bourbon all really well incorporated in this one. Rich and velvety mouthfeel. What is there else to say? As this beer has a lot of hype around it is easy to see how it might not live up to expectations, but this beer really hits the mark. It smooth and complex with being to one sided and unbalanced. The barrel aging added an extra depth that really for me makes this a worthwhile beer. Just excellent.

Big thanks to my buddy beerchugger for opening his pappy! Very nice tasting a night of huge beers, one to remember. Pours black with no head as I swirl it clings and hangs onto my glass with some promising lacing. Smell is off the hook with coffee, chocolate, bourbon (oh Yeah), molasses, brown sugar, vanilla, tobacco, leather and licorice. Taste is much of the same chocolate, coffee, molasses, bourbon, dates, raisins, vanilla, tobacco and licorice. This beer coats and sticks to the palate nicely. Finish is bourbon and sweet but very well balanced. This was a special beer and a great night!

(Courtesy of daknole!). Pours dark brown with red hue. Aroma has oak, bourbon, taste is sweet with buttery caramel and bourbon. Full bodied with a sticky texture. Smooth finish. This beer is unreal!

Pappy Van Winkle Bottle - Pours black with little to no head. Loads of chocolate and vanilla on the nose with caramel, oak, bourbon, toffee, cinnamon, dates, raisins, and booze. Smooth and creamy on the the tongue with rich brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla that leads to a heavier fruity quality of dates and raisins. This quickly turns to heavy chocolate, toffee, caramel, and the finish is sweet with a touch of spice and heat from a nice warming effect as the beer finishes.

On tap at DLD 2011. Pours black as pitch with a thin creme head. Incredible aroma of vanilla and bourbon, char, oak, chocolate and coffee. The aroma is simply unbelievable! Other complex aromas of tobacco, molasses, smoke, burnt dates, raisins, licorice, and caramel. Thick, heavy, oily mouthfeel really coats the palate well. This beer is so full of flavor. The vanilla, bourbon, and chocolate are so pronounced, rich and heavy. The coffee notes really come through strong and wonderfully with more of a soft roast flavor rather than a bitter roast. Molasses and licorice couple together to add the complexity. The finish is long and rich, heavy with coffee and dark cocoa. The vanilla really sings in this most amazing of all brews! Best beer Iíve ever had, no question. This completely lives up to all the hype!

Huge thanks to phaleslu for sharing this gem! Tasted 7/8/11. 22oz bomber. Bottle #186/484. Pours pitch black with a trace ring of head. Creamy and rounded aromas with a mild vanilla note. Notes of dark chocolate and coffee. Good alcohol note in the olfactory. Full bodied and the barrel aging is nicely melded. Very creamy with the oak notes really apparent and adding another dimension to the palate. Great use of the barrel; it adds to the overall palate, but also to the alcohol nuance. Truly awesome!
