emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Oct 13, 2007 Updated: Jul 23, 2009Many thanks to my mom (thats right) for getting me this on my birthday. Poured black, and I mean oil black. No head on the pour but I coaxed up a nice thin brown one. The aroma had strong molasses, chocolate, coffee, alcohol, vanilla, brown sugar, dark fruit and cherries, nice and sweet. The flavor was almost overwhelming. Sweet, coffee, molasses, bitter chocolate, brown sugar, vanilla, smooth, and a tad bit of alcohol. God, it feels like oil in my mouth. I’ve never had a thicker beer in my life. Has zero carbonation and a viscous mouthfeel. bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Oct 12, 2007 thanks eagle. After waiting and waiting for this one, what a let down. 07 Poured a dark brown with good head. Aroma was dark fruits pine lacking enough malty and no coffee. Flavor was much the same although the malts were there, even a little sour. Top beers not this one. cathcacr (586), Portland, Oregon, USA Oct 8, 2007 Tried 10/7/07 courtesy of the man, kenb. Didn’t take notes as I tried this, but I noted in conversation that it is certainly BIG and high/over-powered on the flavor and I could, by that token, see how it would garner its reputation. Most thick and rich and delicious, though it’s mere personal preference that keeps me from giving this a higher score. Impys are big drinking and I tend to rate them highly, but not to seek them out. But for an Impy, it’s difficult to imagine better. But I saved an even better pick for rating #400.
jezmez68 (332), Chesterton, Indiana, USA Oct 1, 2007 Acquired at 2007 Dark Lord Day. Waited this long to open the first on 9/30/07. Well worth the wait, shared with teh wife and a friend. Pours opaque black, can’t see through the liquid even when 2 sips are left in the glass. Dark caramel colored bubbly very small head. Smells of chocolate, cherries and coffee. Tastes about the same. Incredible beer, but still, sort of an anomally as you would drink this like a brandy rather than a stout. TBone (6675), Pori, Finland Sep 30, 2007 Bottled vintage 2006
Thanks marsi & blursi :) Dark ruby color, almost opaque color, small expresso head. Dark malts, coffee, some oxidation notes in the nose. Coffee, dark malts, some vanilla, roasted notes plus some sweetness. Somehow it didn’t hit my sweet spot, expected more. pantanap (1323), Chicago, Illinois, USA Sep 29, 2007 Updated: Nov 12, 2007bottle of 2007 edition.....aroma: dark fruits mainly of dark cherry and perhaps some plum, some richness added by the chocolate malt, roasty, and an all around sweetness overall.....appearance: deep, thick and very close to being black. thin tan head.....taste: very rich and filling chocolate with hints of dark fruit, vanilla, and molasses. an awesome combination of flavors melded into this satisfying imperial stout. oh6gdx (8801), Vasa, Finland Sep 29, 2007 Bottled (2006 vintage, thanks marsiblursi, you’re the best!). Deep ambery colour (almost black) with small brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, some chocolate, dark dry fruit, coffee and burnt wet wood. Flavour is dark fruits, alcohol, vanilla and some wooden hints also. Really caramellish as it warms up a bit. Pleasant brew. MoDog (909), Griffith, Indiana, USA Sep 27, 2007 200th Rating: Poured from a 2007 vintage 22oz bomber and served in a snifter. This brew poured a totally opaque black with a very slight dark tan head that quickly disappeared. Some very sticky, thick, oily legs coated the entire inside of the glass. The aroma of the beer was made up of french roast coffee, dark chocolate, molasses, dark fruits, and also some burnt malt notes. The flavor included strong coffee and chocolate notes, dark cherries and plums, molasses, some lightly smokey burnt malts, and just a hint of vanilla. Just an amazing taste to experience! The mouthfeel was ultra thick and chewy. Definately full-bodied with almost no noticable carbonation. An outstanding beer that is truly worthy of the high praise. Excellent!!!
