2006 bottle. Ah, the venerable Dark Lord. Glugs out of the bottle with the darkness and viscosity of motor oil that hasnít been changed in 30k miles. An inch high whipped mocha head rises to the surface and sets up in the glass, clinging to it with an oily, almost bacon greasy ring. Damn, this is some crazy looking stuff. Aroma isnít over the top, but Iím definitely picking up some big roasty malts, bittersweet chocolate and molasses . The coffee seems to hit more in the taste, along with some caramelized raisins, vanilla and rich maple syrup/molasses. Thereís definitely a lot going on here. Mouthfeel is creamy, smooth and full bodied without next to zero hotness. An impressive stout for sure. Does it live up to the hype? Partially. But I think you can pick up some other impy stouts with 90% of the quality/characteristics of this one for far less $ and difficulty. Nevertheless, the Dark Lord is worthy of at least a pedestal next to the throne.

2011 batch consumed 10 Aug 14 - Gift bottle from Eric K: Breakfast in the infield of Watkins Glen. Luscious, viscous pour, wisp of a head. The palate twists and turns befit the road course setting. Nothing Iíd change.

ok, so i just noticed now that i never reviewed this even though i drank an entire bottle out of the bottle myself at the very very end of RBSG 2010. Most of this got crushed as me and some other drunks stumbled towards the hotel from the Grand Tasting venue across from Founders. Drinking on the street was never better. I should have wrapped it up in a brown paper bag. Beer was blackish but maybe that had to do with the lack of real good street lights. You know it was fucking tasty as all get out but I became more focused on not being found in a dumpster in the morning. Staying awake for the next 30 hours didnít turn out to be the best idea Iíve had but those automatic flushing toilets in the Chicago airport made it all worthwhile.

2014 bottle. Thick motor oil black pour. Heavy black licorice smell. Very sweet plum tasting. Wow is there a lot of flavor. Lots of fruity taste and sweet licorice taste.

2011 vintage bottle shared at RichTheVillanís, 27/11/13. Pours black, tan head recedes. Huge sweet nose of booze, roast, stone fruit, chocolate and dark sugar. Tastes sweet with notes of cherry, vanilla, roast malt, some coffee and chocolate. Extremely sweet, too much so for me. Complex stout, no doubt, but if itís still that sweet after 2 years will it ever dry out?

Bottle from a trade. Many thanks artmcd8! Vintage 2014. Oily syrupy texture. Black, almost no foam. Aroma of sweet molasses, sweet brown chocolate, sticky toffee pudding, caramel and vanilla. Very sweet, boozy and sticky. This is not a good stout. Overly sweet without complexity. Impossible to drink a lot of this, so with the rest of the bottle we made a cake, which was very good with Dark Lord as ingredient.

UPDATED: DEC 3, 2014 600ml bottle served in a snifter glass. Iíve bought this one at one of my last visits to California, in 2010. This is the 2010 Edition which can be recognized by the green wax on the bottle neck. A: Pours a black color forming a small and bubbled tan head. Low retention and only few lacings left in the glass S: Strong roasted malts, dark chocolate, dark fruits and wood. Excellent! Licorice and vanilla to compose. A bit boozy in the end T: Sweet and roasted upfront. Notes of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, oak, licorice, vanilla and dark fruits. Cherry notes. Complex. Maybe a bit too sweet and too booze in the end M: Heavy, creamy and molasses body. Low carbonation. Smooth with a bittersweet and roasted and woody aftertaste O: Great drinkability. A masterpiece. Worth the three years that Iíve wait to drink it [ BA Review @ 7/24/2013 ]
