I was really hoping to hate this beer, especially at $15/22 oz. bottle. Shared this brew with my wife and two friends. Consensus from each of us was that this was the best beer any of us have ever had. This was not like drinking beer, it deserves its own category. It's not a beer, food, dessert or cigar. It's like taking the best things in life and putting it in one bottle. Almost undescribeable. Aroma is creamy with chocolate and coffee notes. Head is thin and dissipates quickly. Appearance, who cares, how does it taste? Flavor--I don't really know how to describe it. There was chocolate, coffee, pudding, toffee, raisins, caramel, hops and it changed nicely as it warmed. The alcohol is hidden very well. Was this worth $15 for a bottle? Hell yes! I bought two bottles and would have gladly taken a case if I had sampled it before hand. My beer lifetime goal is to somehow get a keg of this someday and take a vacation to enjoy it.

Served from 22oz red waxed ’12 bottle. Served in Teku. Aroma -- sweet cherry, oak-like aroma unlike other Imperial Stouts I’ve encountered. Rightfully so, the aroma of this beer, unlike many other world-class beers, is one of the most unique attributes of this beer. It should be admired for its magnificence. Appearance -- possesses the consistency of an oil well: abysmal, hellish, beyond the cusp of foreboding darkness. Taste -- true full-bodied, pleasantly deep, Imperial Stout that engulfs your palate and pushes you to the limit, Ross. Booziness has died down, still 15%+, nonetheless.. Subtle burnt char-like, smokiness after you have had many sips. I would not consider the beer smokey, though, by any means (i.e., I have a hard time appreciating smokiness in beer; the smokiness that is present in DL ’12 is enjoyable for any IRS lover). Palate -- encourages your palate to step its game up and appreciate the uniqueness of this remarkable concoction. Overall -- Dark Lord is not the greatest Imperial Stout ever made; nonetheless, it surely stands in a category of its own: pure damnation, emboldening me to set my own substantial precedent. Merry Christmas, Ratebeer lovers.

2011 batch consumed 10 Aug 14 - Gift bottle from Eric K: Breakfast in the infield of Watkins Glen. Luscious, viscous pour, wisp of a head. The palate twists and turns befit the road course setting. Nothing I’d change.

ok, so i just noticed now that i never reviewed this even though i drank an entire bottle out of the bottle myself at the very very end of RBSG 2010. Most of this got crushed as me and some other drunks stumbled towards the hotel from the Grand Tasting venue across from Founders. Drinking on the street was never better. I should have wrapped it up in a brown paper bag. Beer was blackish but maybe that had to do with the lack of real good street lights. You know it was fucking tasty as all get out but I became more focused on not being found in a dumpster in the morning. Staying awake for the next 30 hours didn’t turn out to be the best idea I’ve had but those automatic flushing toilets in the Chicago airport made it all worthwhile.

2011 vintage bottle shared at RichTheVillan’s, 27/11/13. Pours black, tan head recedes. Huge sweet nose of booze, roast, stone fruit, chocolate and dark sugar. Tastes sweet with notes of cherry, vanilla, roast malt, some coffee and chocolate. Extremely sweet, too much so for me. Complex stout, no doubt, but if it’s still that sweet after 2 years will it ever dry out?

Bottle from a trade. Many thanks artmcd8! Vintage 2014. Oily syrupy texture. Black, almost no foam. Aroma of sweet molasses, sweet brown chocolate, sticky toffee pudding, caramel and vanilla. Very sweet, boozy and sticky. This is not a good stout. Overly sweet without complexity. Impossible to drink a lot of this, so with the rest of the bottle we made a cake, which was very good with Dark Lord as ingredient.
