Aroma of sweet molasses, booze, and coffee. Pours dark and thick without much head. Very viscous mouthfeel. Hugely sweet with flavors of molasses, oak, licorice, coffee, and light hops. Very sweet, but very good. Probably awesome with vanilla ice cream.

Intensely huge...so good chocolate and roast with rich fruity esters and caramel. Flavors matched with rich caramel and roast and prune. Alcohol warmth was fantastic. Sucha great big brew

Vertical tasting of 2006-2008.Average rating above. Poured deep dark brown with no head. Aroma is increasingly vinous with age, dark, alcohol soaked fruit, fudge, dark chocolate some coffee. Full body, flavour as the aroma, generally smooth, 07 drier. Dry, sweet end.

Blue wax. Interesting soy sauce, chocolate, malty, metallic aroma. Long lasting brown head, a lot of effervescence. Completely black, but redish when observed under light. Complex and smooth flavor, amazingly well balanced and deceptive in alcohol content for it’s ABV. Upfront a sweetness/soy character, with molasses and sweet malt coming through later on and a very mild, sweet, roasty finish. Not much coffee evident, interestingly. Thick bodied and average carbonation. A great imperial stout. although may be slightly too hyped for it’s own good -- would be interested to see how this one holds up with age. Grateful that I got to try this beer though!

Horizontal with some other whales: Dark Lord ’12, Darkness ’13, Cinnamon Roll’d Wake ’n Bake ’13, Hunahpu ’14 -- Poured into a snifter sampler. This beer was incredibly tasty, super sweet, and it completely masks the alcohol. Very impressive beer, and one I am very happy to cross off my list.

Catching up on RBAG 2014 notes backlog...bottle sent to me by northropfrye-- thanks Andrew! Orange wax, 2013 vintage. Incredible viscous pour, motor-oil-thick, with a slow to rise dark brown head. Densely malty, sticky sweet and chewy, loads of residual sugars but the dark malts keep me interested and happy. I was prepared for a syrupy mess, but even though this is definitely over-the-top and incredibly unbalanced, I still loved it! It’s like a stack of thick hot syrup-soaked pancakes-- a hot sugary mess that you can’t help but love!

FINALLY! thank you GothGargoyle! 2010 bottle. Very dark brown, with a light edging. Aroma of sweet cocoa, espresso, vanilla, plum. Taste is vanilla ice cream sweet, and molasses coffee bitterness. Palate is initially refreshing, but develops to a creamy, sticky dry finish.

Transfer from BA review on 1-1-13- Poured from a 2010 bottle into a snifter glass I have been saving this one for quite some time. I have had years prior as well as this vintage a year prior. This is my first review of it however. I have always enjoyed drinking this quite robust and thick brew. This is the last of my bottles and I thought it appropriate to drink on occasion of the new year. Appearance – Pours a nearly pitch black color with a tiny tan head. The head fades very fast leaving almost no lacing. Upon swirling, the thickness and huge body of the beer can be seen with it clinging to the sides of the glass and it slowly receding back to the pool of beer at the bottom of the snifter. Smell-The aroma on this one is huge. It is heavy of a sweet chocolate and espresso smell. Mixed with this aroma are smells of stone fruits, with aromas of cherry, raisin and prune. Other aromas of vanilla, bourbon and caramel are also detected in the nose giving an overall robust and quite complex, but delicious smell. Taste – The taste begins heavy of cocoa and some dark fruits. The dark fruits, mainly of cherry and prune, were light in comparison to the sweet cocoa which creates a thick and robust base for the taste of the brew. Flavors of vanilla and caramel come to the tongue more toward the middle of the taste creating a chocolate covered fruit like flavor. At this point the taste is quite big and sweet. Toward the end a big boozy flavor comes to the tongue. The boozy flavor is largely bourbon in nature and when combined with the sweet and cocoa flavors of the brew, it creates a warningly sweet flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – This is one thick brew. The body is massively creamy and thick. It coats the tongue and baths it in all the intense and robust flavors of the brew. With the carbonation (not surprisingly) being on the lower side, the thickness when combined with the alcohol taste creates a very warming and thick feeling. Overall- A quite delicious brew. I have never been disappointed. The massive flavors that meld quite well with one another and warming feel make it a brew of high regard.
