4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
2008 bottle. Poured a dark black color. The head was a solid 1 finger and produced little lacing. The motor oil smelled delicious, complex as always. The roasted malt, coffee, vanilla, raisins, molasses, and dark unsweetened chocolate flavors melded and melted in my mouth with the perfect mouthfeel. This is one of the best balanced beers I’ve encountered. Always an A+

Transfer from BA review on 1-1-13-
Poured from a 2010 bottle into a snifter glass
I have been saving this one for quite some time. I have had years prior as well as this vintage a year prior. This is my first review of it however. I have always enjoyed drinking this quite robust and thick brew. This is the last of my bottles and I thought it appropriate to drink on occasion of the new year.
Appearance – Pours a nearly pitch black color with a tiny tan head. The head fades very fast leaving almost no lacing. Upon swirling, the thickness and huge body of the beer can be seen with it clinging to the sides of the glass and it slowly receding back to the pool of beer at the bottom of the snifter.
Smell-The aroma on this one is huge. It is heavy of a sweet chocolate and espresso smell. Mixed with this aroma are smells of stone fruits, with aromas of cherry, raisin and prune. Other aromas of vanilla, bourbon and caramel are also detected in the nose giving an overall robust and quite complex, but delicious smell.
Taste – The taste begins heavy of cocoa and some dark fruits. The dark fruits, mainly of cherry and prune, were light in comparison to the sweet cocoa which creates a thick and robust base for the taste of the brew. Flavors of vanilla and caramel come to the tongue more toward the middle of the taste creating a chocolate covered fruit like flavor. At this point the taste is quite big and sweet. Toward the end a big boozy flavor comes to the tongue. The boozy flavor is largely bourbon in nature and when combined with the sweet and cocoa flavors of the brew, it creates a warningly sweet flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – This is one thick brew. The body is massively creamy and thick. It coats the tongue and baths it in all the intense and robust flavors of the brew. With the carbonation (not surprisingly) being on the lower side, the thickness when combined with the alcohol taste creates a very warming and thick feeling.
Overall- A quite delicious brew. I have never been disappointed. The massive flavors that meld quite well with one another and warming feel make it a brew of high regard.

2014 version. Thank you to Brad for this very generous gift. Pours an oily pitch black in color with a thinner, reddish brown head. The aroma hits you with a potent bourbon and heavy chocolate. These elements are rounded out with vanilla, coffee, some light toffee, roasted malts, and slight mint. The main impression from the taste is that its extremely sweet, probably to sweet. Its big on bourbon and vanilla, with caramel and chocolate found and becoming more pronounced at the end. Aftertaste of bourbon, more chocolate, and less vanilla sticks with you for a long time. Full in body and milder in carbonation. The texture is very oily, like syrup actually. Without a doubt this is excellent. Its unique, strong, and intense. Its great for the experience of actually getting the chance to try this. However, as much as I enjoyed it, I would have been even happier if it wasn’t so sweet.

Bottle at Mikkeller & Friends, july 25th 2014. Black body, nice tanned head. Aroma of licorice, fresh roasted coffee, ash, dried fruit, dark chocolate notes. Taste of sweet chocolate, strong coffee, raisins, plum, oranges, bittersweet finish with a long complex aftertaste of coffee and dark fruit. Nice complexity throughout, and a beer I’m ecstatic for finally getting to try.

Pours oily black. Nose is pretty impressive with chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, maybe some nuts.
Taste is less impressive, pretty one-dimensional with lots of (read: TONS OF) sweet chocolate, which totally overpowers the coffee notes that are hidden somewhere. Good balance on the alcohol, 15% but not disturbing.
Very good beer, but I expected more.

Waaaaaaaaay to sweet! Sugar was very over powering which limited the beginning and finish! Had a 2014 and was very disappointed!

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
2013: Pours thick, viscous black with little/no head. Smell of dark chocolate, espresso, roasted malt, hint of bourbon. Taste is very sweet with chocolate covered cherries, black coffee. Hint of booze. Thick, velvety texture. Long smooth finish. Amazing for a 15%
2014: Blue wax - Pours again thick viscous black with little no head. Same dark chocolate, more prominent espresso this year. Slightly more boozy. Taste has more prominent coffee. Mildly sweet. Hint of spices. Very thick, velvety. Long smooth finish. Better than 2013 I think.

Orange wax 2013 version. Completely overrated. Hard to drink, it’s like an alcoholic version of dark caramel topping syrup. The taste is strong, but it’s gone in no time. Very sticky stuff.

2013 orange wax bottle. was very eager to try this beer, had an immediate smell of molasses and dark fruit. when tasteing i picked up caramel, plums, raisens and cherries. quite frankly this was a truely unique stout ( almost like a blend between a stout and a quad) but when compared to others on the market it doesnt quite measure up to me. i have a 2014 and am going to let it sit 4 years to see if it balances out a bit. but although it didnt reach the hype it was still a fantastic beer and worth trying

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle at the Beechner Blind Beer Bash. 2014 bottle. Nose is a ton of fruit. Like crazy amounts of fruit, some tart cherry. Light chocolate and roast. Taste is like a thick cherry liquer. I’m not sure if this is all a factor of being fresh or if something in the recipe has changed. I’ve had 3 older bottles, three or four years or older and found the beer to be way less fruity and more well balanced. This one is fruity dominant and lacks almost all coffee components. weird.

Pours dark, smells amazing. Incredibly smooth for the alcohol content. Great after taste.
