3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
09 bottle. So for my 300th rating, I decided to have Dark Lord. I had high hopes, which usually leads to a letdown, so I decided to trick myself a bit to prevent this. I decided to do a blind tasting with Expy, 110K+OTB2, Founders Impy, and Speedway. I figured this way I would get my true opinion on it and not my worried letdown opinion. Well, needless to say, there was still a letdown. Pours a thick black with brown hue, absolutely no head to be seen whatsoever (upon tasting, but was able to coax a thin dark tan head out with farther pour), lots brown lacing around glass. Aroma is very solid of coffee, dark chocolate, dark fruits, some tart fruits, molasses, roasted malt, caramel, and hints of vanilla. First sip threw me for a loop. Cloyingly sweet, boozy, ever so slight tartness disguised many of the good properties of the brew. No hops detected at all. Mouthfeel is heavy and creamy. If it didnít smell so good and look so nice, this would have been a much lower rating. I have an 07 and 08 bottle in the cellar that I will have to try to see if age helps this, but man, I am really starting to believe this is all hype and no substance. Especially when a $3 bottle of Expy beats the pants off the $15 bottle. *raises last half-FULL glass of Dark Lord* Hereís to hoping that it improves with age.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle shared awhile ago. Poured into a small snifter. Deep brown, nearly black with a tan head. The aroma was solid with dark chocolate, sweet malts, caramel, vanilla beans, oak barrel and bourbon. The taste was sweet milk chocolate, carnation sweet milks, vanilla beans, chocolate chip cookie dough, and dark plums. Mostly balanced but it was very sweet and boozie. Not exactly smooth. Full body and chewy. I donít get the hype but it is very good.

Taste is sweet malt, licorice, vanilla, soy, booze, great. Mouthfeel is thick, oily, great carbonation. Overall, finally got to try it and, while I donít understand the hype, it was good nonetheless.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
This is the 2014 vintage. Black pour with almost no head. What head exists is a brown. The aroma is potent with alcohol, charred meat, smoke, coffee. The flavor is remarkably smooth. Iím really surprised how sweet this beer is. Itís much more drinkable than I was expecting. It packs a punch. It has a soy sauce and teriyaki vibe. Almost no aftertaste which is also surprising. It dies really quickly.

Originally reviewed 11/25/2011. 22 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. 2010 vintage. Standard stout appearance. Jet black. The small head is actually surprising, considering the ABV. The sugars are damn near visible as it streaks down the glass.
Intense aromas. Coffee, chocolate, booze. The booze actually smells great, despite that itís practically burning my nose. Fruity aromas as well. Not as roasty as I would expect.
Tingly alcohol throughout the taste. Incredibly sweet. Coffee flavors and chocolate malts through the middle. Slightly bitter in the finish and an alcohol burn that lasts for a few moments. Itís a pretty complex flavor, but itís immensely sweet.
Pretty well carbonated for a 15% stout. Pretty boozy, too, though. And the sweetness just makes it so hard to drink. Small quantities is the most I can muster with this thing.
My views on this beer have changed dramatically since originally trying it. It is what it is. Too sweet for me, but itís something I would have enjoyed in my novice drinking years.

2008/Black Wax. From notes in 2010:
Strong aromas of roast, bitter chocolate, coffee and toffee. Black, almost jet color and tan head that dissipated to lacing rather quickly. Flavor is right in stride with that aroma! Holy Hell!!! What an amazing impy stout.
