09 bottle. So for my 300th rating, I decided to have Dark Lord. I had high hopes, which usually leads to a letdown, so I decided to trick myself a bit to prevent this. I decided to do a blind tasting with Expy, 110K+OTB2, Founders Impy, and Speedway. I figured this way I would get my true opinion on it and not my worried letdown opinion. Well, needless to say, there was still a letdown. Pours a thick black with brown hue, absolutely no head to be seen whatsoever (upon tasting, but was able to coax a thin dark tan head out with farther pour), lots brown lacing around glass. Aroma is very solid of coffee, dark chocolate, dark fruits, some tart fruits, molasses, roasted malt, caramel, and hints of vanilla. First sip threw me for a loop. Cloyingly sweet, boozy, ever so slight tartness disguised many of the good properties of the brew. No hops detected at all. Mouthfeel is heavy and creamy. If it didnít smell so good and look so nice, this would have been a much lower rating. I have an 07 and 08 bottle in the cellar that I will have to try to see if age helps this, but man, I am really starting to believe this is all hype and no substance. Especially when a $3 bottle of Expy beats the pants off the $15 bottle. *raises last half-FULL glass of Dark Lord* Hereís to hoping that it improves with age.

2012 bottle from Justin, thanks a lot!
Pours dark brown with red hues, hardly any head or bubbles. Miso/Soy/Umami, lots of sweetness, toffee, sugary malt, balsamic vinegar in aroma. Taste has chocolate, port wine, dates, coconut, loads of sugary sweetness, peppery notes, some alcohol. Full body, low carbonation, sticky mouth feel. Short after taste.
Shared with 3 people and we had a hard time getting it all down. too much sugary sweetness. And I thought that Surly Darkness was sweet.

2013 bottle opened in Apr-14. Pours black, no head, lots of booze around the edge of the glass. Aroma is raisin/prune, molasses. Taste is dark fruits, molasses, honey, brown sugar, caramel. Not picking up any coffee notes but some vanilla is present. Quite good. Looking forward to the rest of the vertical I have assembled to see how this ages.

At big Sethís going away party on 11/2/2013; was an awesome day! White wax, 2009. Pours motor oil black with small head. Armoa is big thing smooth fig and burnt malt. The burnt malt is smooth though and the notes are really well rounded and complex. Taste is beautiful roasted fig, some nice caramel sweetness, smooth burnt malt, very complex maltiness. The beer is absolutely fantastic. I love this shit. Just lay them down for 6 years and they are phenomenal.

Noir aux reflets rougeâtres. Presqu'aucun collet. Très riche. Légèrement aqueuse. Fine effervescence. Sucré. Mélasse. Vanillé. Bien balancé. Ne fait vraiment pas son pourcentage. Chocolat. Légèrement torréfié. Café vanille/ au lait. Fruité framboise. Baie. Prune. Banane. Truffe au chocolat. Un peu de réglisse. Raisin sec. Finale légèrement amère avc beaucoup de sucre. Très complexe. J'aime beaucoup.

2013 Vintage Pours dark and thick. Boozy and sweet aroma. Thick mouthfeel. Nondescript booziness, dark malt and turbinado sugar on the palate. Overall unimpressive IMO. I donít get where the hype comes from on this one.

FINALLY GOT TO SAMPLE THIS!!! Green wax, at the 2014 HMOG in Decatur, GA. Pours a deep coffee brown with a nice tan head. Aroma has notes of roast malt, quality coffee and raisins. Somewhat sweet flavor has notes of good coffee, chocolate, raisin and toffee. Mouthfeel is viscous and fizzy, leaving a very pleasing finish. A real treat to get a snort of this legend.

Bottled. Black beer, lacy tan head. Licorice and soy sauce nose, some alcohol, thick caramel, grains, roasted barley notes. Port wine berries, woody notes and chocolate increase after a few whiffs. Full of dried fruits, green hop notes, some earthy notes. Very complex. Sweet and heavy flavor, raisins, wood, leading into a slightly tingling bitter finish with hints of ash and tobacco. Alcohol is very well hidden, some warmth remains. Extremely full-bodied, port vinous body. Balance is amazing for such a strong beer.Bottled. Black beer, lacy tan head. 2013 bottle. Good but not blown away. Too sweet for me and Iíd like some more alternate flavors - but it still is a great stout.

Thanks to BelgBeerGeek for sharing this one. (Do I have to thank you for this Iím wondering ;-) ) If you want to smell & taste alcohol, molasses, sugar; this is your beer. Sugar all over the place. Boring & untasty. Overhyped American beer. Actually, imho this is not beer. Thoughts when I see ratings above 10/20 for this one: 1) Beer has to have some presence of malts & hops. 2) Somebody think of the children. Price/quality ratio: below par.
