4.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 TheBeerLover (1019) - DC Metro Area, USA - AUG 11, 2009
22 oz bomber purchased at the brewery in Munster, IN in June 2009. Live in DFH territory but have yet to see this one, had to go to IN to get this one.
Pours to a deep tawy brown color with a tight, tan head that fades and a moderate to soft carbonation. The nose on this beer is very pleasing. Lots of good spice aromas of cinnamon, pepper, and vanilla pair with some grassy/herbal hop aroma. Hints of chocolate and light coffee notes as well. Really a lot going on here. The palate offers the same, good caramel and chocolate malt flavors pair with hints of cinnamon, vanilla, and coffee and an undertone of estery fruit. This beer finishes with more good dark malt and coffee flavor up front, then ends with a touch of fruit and coffee roasty flavor.
Very impressive. Dangerously drinkable as it hides its 10% abv very well. I like Popskull, well worth buying if you see it.

22 ounce bottle shared by Allstar at Immy’s Backyard Throwdown. Thanks! Pours a clear dark red color with a small head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma is dark chocolate and roasted malts. Taste is dark chocolate, bitter roasted malts and bitter hop notes. Faint notes of berries, toffee and caramel. Full bodied. Damn good beer... one of 3F’s best.

This beer pours a deep reddish amber with a thin off white head. The aromas are chocolate, roasted coffee. The mouthfeel is stick and a little watery with a bitterness and medium body. Good beer! Cheers!

This poured a murky brown color with an off white head. Aroma was lots of dark roasted malts, some toffee, caramel and palo santo. Flavor was just amazing, a perfect mix of nuts, toffee caramel, slightly burned malts, and palo santo wood as well. Hid the alcohol very well too. Great beer.

Sampled from 22 oz. bottle. Pours a dark amber/clear brown color with a small white head. Aroma is malts, chocolate, caramel, touches of fruit. Flavor is malts, dried fruits, touches of malts, touches of roast, oak character. Reminded me of the fantastic Palo Santo, which isn’t surprising since it’s the using the same barrels to age.

A: Very deep, nutty brown. Not quite the color of Palo Santo, likely more toward the color of DFH Indian Brown.
S: Lots of brown malt going into this one, with a little bit of the wood coming through in the nose. There is some caramel, toffee, hints of wood, brown sugar, and some dried fruits. Overall, a mild sweetness lingers and awaits my lips.
T: Very similar to the smell with a touch more of the wood. The flavor profile is a bit muted at fridge temperature, and everything melds together much better as this one warms up, and it seems to get a little bit sweeter. Also, the bottle of this that I had in September was much better than the bottle some friends and I cracked during the Dark Lord festivities. One more bottle waiting in the cellar.
M: Fairly full bodied especially with the wood flavors becoming more prevalent. The alcohol is there, but definitely not overpowering.
D: Not as drinkable as it could be, but with the Palo aging, I wasn’t expecting a bastion of drinkability.

Bottle. Thanks to Motortoddhead for the hookup! Pours a deep brownish black color with a minimal head. Aroma is hersheys syrup and almonds. Flavor is chocolate and bready malts, along with ripe toffee prune fruits. Earthy notes in here as well. Nice medium to full body. Cocoa finish. Alcohol is not noticeable at all, this stuff could creep up on you. I’m impressed, this is a solid beer.
