Aroma is rather sweet (caramel, maple syrup, and malts). Taste is quite subtle: balanced roasted malts and bitter hops with molasses, dark fruit, and a touch of smoke. Expected a bit more "pop" in this one. High ABV is very well concealed. Interesting and highly drinkable.

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 19, 2009 Bomber. Poured rich, cola brown with a wispy dusting of beige head and a few larger bubbles. The aroma was quite intriguing.. toasted cocoa, brown sugar, and a hint of molasses laced with woody and prickly alcohol character.. warmth brought out a bit of floral presence and more alcohol. The flavor found cocoa, earth, and a touch of coffee at the core with light-moderate roast to it.. vanilla and brown sugar emanated outward.. the woody and boozy notes were a bit too aggressive on the edges.. finished dry and sharp. Medium-plus bodied with low-ish carbonation on the palate.. the wood and something almost metallic provided too much acidity for my liking.. there were definitely some solid components here, but I didn’t get what they were shooting for. tarheels86 (738), Washington DC, USA

Pours a deep, cloudy mahogany with an excellent, creamy tan head once the yeast comes in (rather cola-like and fizzy before the yeast). As drink this the head leaves just incredible lacing all over the snifter. Aroma is rich dark chocolate, rich rum-soaked black cherries, has an distinct barrel character, some beautiful cedar (palo santo?), and other complex notes that I can’t quite place. Just awesome. Taste is rich, creamy, stout-like with spicy wood character. Drying cedar finish. Medium bodied with an oily mouthfeel. Just really really good. AlphaBear (10), Pennsylvania, USA

I am usually skeptical of Dogfish Head but open to any new releases from Three Floyds. Putting aside my ambivalenceI ordered a bottle to go while at Three Floyds and cracked it open a few weeks later. Overall I am very impressed and hope this sees future bottlings.
Aroma / Appearance - Clear lacing merged into a deep reddish brown base after seconds of slow motion. Woody chocolate was not quite what I expected from something that sounded like a sour brown but was nice regardless.
Flavor / Palate - Chocolate brownies soaked in cedar provided a nice depth. Below was the usual aspects of a brown ale. The velvety chocolate finish was a cohesive touch. Overall this is a winner with few flaws. WisconsinBeer (521), St Paul, Minnesota, USA

Pours a deep brownish black color with a minimal head. Aroma is hersheys syrup and almonds. Flavor is chocolate and bready malts, along with ripe toffee prune fruits. Earthy notes in here as well. Nice medium to full body. Cocoa finish. Alcohol is not noticeable at all, this stuff could creep up on you. I’m impressed, this is a solid beer. Tripplebrew (493), Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA
