COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A hopheadís dream beer. This Imperial India Pale Ale has an opening salvo of mango, peach and citrus hop aromas that sit atop a pronounced caramel malt backbone. Although Dreadnaught is a strong and intensely hoppy ale, its complex flavors is both smooth and memorable. 9.5% ABV, 100 IBUs.

pours orange tinted brown with a thick light tan head that laces. aroma is of pine trees that are growing lemons in a tall aromatic field of grass. taste is very smooth considering all that is going on here. piney taste with vanilla wafers. finish is grassy and citrus. wonderful lingering bitter with sweetness that is like a piece of cheesecake and a cup of coffee without the coffee flavor somehow. thanks bbb63.

Bottle. Nice garnet bottle with minimal head. Has flavor notes of lemon, hops, pine, bitterness, citrus, and grapefruit. Nice velvety soft mouthfeel. Very good balance of malt and hops. Overall very mellow and enjoyable. Big thanks to BBB63 via Kevin for this.

Pours a cloudy gold. Almost mind-blowing aroma of pine, honey, and a citric burn in the back. Not exactly what I expected from an IIPA, and the flavor was even more surprising. There is a lot of bitterness, but an almost equal amount of sweet honey. Thick, honey coating on the tongue. Maybe too much for a hophead like myself. Hops are obviously in effect in this beer, but donít have a big finish or noticable resin. Both sweet and sour are very big in this beer and balanced for a smooth feel, honey is probably the dominant flavor.

Big grapefruit and pine hops to begin with sweet honey malts to follow. This beer is BIG and for an IPA is pretty thick on the palate. This is a lively beer, as carbonation continues to bubble from the glass even as it is almost empty. The hop profile of this beer isnt mouthwateringly complex, but the hop flavors that are present are seriously assertive, if not aggressive. However the malt sweetness backs it up enough to keep it in check. Dont get me wrong , this is a great beer and any serious hophead needs to at least try this. Watch out though, this stuff is smooooth and with the alcohol as well hidden as it is it will creep on you.

UPDATED: JAN 26, 2006 22oz - A sharp sticky hop filled nose. Nice orange color with medium off white head that stuck around for a while, nice lacing. It tastes very earthy. Strong hops that lingers with every sip. I brought this one in my carry-on from indy to San Diego. Iím not sure how old it is, but tastes like the sharp hop is flat from age. I will have a freshy and re-rate. 04/08/05 - 8,4,7,4,16=3.9

Re-Rate on 08/10/05 22oz - Fresh batch - Aroma is pure freshly picked hops. Poured a transparent brownish-orange with a small head and great lacing. Flavor slams with fresh hops then mellows out with a malty chaser. I could try to throw some other flavors in there, but they are getting their butts kicked by the fresh hops. Palate is sticky and tart. Much better fresh in my opinion.

Pour dark cloudy orange with very thin white head that diminishes. Holy Hopiness, the aroma is pure hops, citrusy and piney. Tastes like pure hops and very bitter. Finishes the same way hoppy and bitter all the way through. I do detect somewhat of a malt background. This is the best beer Iíve had. Awesome.

UPDATED: APR 27, 2005 I had a fresh one a month ago, but took no notes, and had an older one last night as part of a big IIPA tasting. Pours reddish orange. Smells honeyish and piney. (The fresh ones aroma was much better, in fact I sat and sniffed it for 5 minutes) Flavor is honey and piney hops. Nice mouthfeel. Will need to do a proper re-rate. RE-RATE 4/27 Fresh? 22oz bottle from a liquor store not too far from 3F. Served at 48į in a Duvel tulip. The beers pours reddish orange with a small, off white head. The aroma is piney, herbal, citrusy, resiny hops with a backing of caramelized turbino sugar. The flavor is citrus and piney hop flavor at first mixed with a sweet, caramelly, malt backing that transitions into a pine forest dripping with sap and fallen pine needles. The bitterness starts midway, but, suprisingly, it is somewhat subdued and the beer is balanced. A very tasty beer for those that love the flavor and aroma of hops, but donít necessarily want to be blown out of the building by bitterness. Score stays the same.
