juiceisloose (634), Windermere, Florida, USA Jun 15, 2008 Courtesy fantomas23. This one poured a clear golden orange color with a medium foamy white head that shows nice retention. The aroma is really nice on this one showing all kinds of hops from grapefruit to pine hops. Sweet caramel and butter toffee come through and provide the malt backbone. Fresh tropical fruits of peaches and mangos come through as well. The flavor follows suit with the grapefruit and piney hops attacking the palate with the tropical fruit and caramel malts adding balance and flavor. The taste is amazing on this one with all the fruits and hops coming at you from all angles. Medium-full bodied with a creamy mouthfeel that is smooth and easy to drink with a long bitter finish. Great flavor and perfect balance. This is a world class IIPA and one I’ll be seeking out more often. Bigmmartin (366), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jun 13, 2008 Updated: Aug 26, 2008Bottle. [rerate] I just had this wonderful brew a few more times since my original rating. I think that it deserves an update. As far as appearance, it is excellent considering the style. It looks just like an IPA should. The aroma is the real selling point though. The huge amount of floral and pine hops grab you and pull you in. You couldn’t resit tasting if you tried. [original rating 9/4/10/4/19]
This is my overall favorite IPA so far. The balance is perfect. Bitterness, malt, abv, carbonation, it all fits together extremely well. The bitterness is wonderfully accompanied by the underlying hints of mango and peaches. ThaBobfather (178), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Jun 12, 2008 Everything that an imperial IPA is. Great balance of the bitter hoppiness and malt flavors with undertones of peaches. This is a highly drinkable imperial IPA, especially given it’s 100 IBU rating. This is what IPA’s what to be when they grow up. FlssmrBrewAlum (1053), Lisle, Illinois, USA Jun 12, 2008 8 oz. draft at the brewpub. Poured an "apple juice" gold/amber mixed hue with a small bright white head. Aromas are wonderous of floral hops, sweet malts, and mango. Initial taste provides a bitter tart hoppiness, with some wonderful peach / apricot notes that really are special. A nice bitter hoppy finish, but still refreshing and not overpowering despite its power (If that makes sense!!!). Medium bodied with a touch of pine in the finish that is noticeable half way through. Aftertaste lingers very well. A top notch beer that has some wonderful complexities. Will drink again. Cheers! doppelmeup (51), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA Jun 10, 2008 This beer pours a deep orange amber color with a sticky foam head. Lacing remains all the way down the glass.
The first smell that hits you with this beer is a strong grapefruit aroma, followed by some pine and cut grass. No shortage of hops here!! A fairly strong alcohol presence is also noted in the smell.
The part of the taste that stands out for me is how much malt backbone there is with this beer. Huge amounts of hops are obvious, but they are balanced equisitely by a strong, malty flavor that compliments the hops. The beer reminds me of ruby red grapegruit juice that has added sugar.
The mouthfeel is rich and thick, with a smooth carbonation and a crisp finish.
This beer is extremely well balanced. I’m not a hophead by any means, but this beer could convert me. An excellent offering by Three Floyds.
satan165 (541), River Grove, Illinois, USA Jun 8, 2008 Updated: Feb 2, 2009IBUs are off the charts! bitterness clobbers you over the head, finally overwhelming the delicious american hops FFF makes its trademark. whereas in an alpha king or similar fare the bright sharp citrus nose is more prevelant, here it has been cut down to size by a puckering bitterness thats nearly second to none. like any good IIPA, its impossible to believe that this is nearing 10%, this is so damn delicious i would drink this until i passed out or died a luscious and plesant death by hops. Dansting (222), Overland Park, Kansas, USA Jun 6, 2008 Bottle. Poured an amber color with a nice thick white head. A ton of lacing. Aroma is very powerful and hoppy. Very nice mouthfeel for an IIPA. Flavor is really hoppy, but not overpowering (in a good way). This is a very tasty beer, with a nice citrus kick to it and a pleasant aftertaste. Quite possibly my second favorite IIPA (after Hopslam). nefarious (202), Clarkston, Michigan, USA Jun 5, 2008 Nice orange pour with a wonderful fruit, pine and citrus aroma!!!!! Outstanding peach flavor and superb finish. This needs to be in every house hold and the world would be a more peaceful place.
