fiver29 (703), Cleveland, Ohio, USA May 6, 2008 Fresh Bottle bought at the brewery 2 weeks ago at DLD. Poured a dark orange color with a thin white head. Smells like I’m walking in a hop field. I think they should patent this for hop perfume. I’m not sure about mangos and peaches, but I smell hop fields, pine, and some slight sweetness. Has a medium mouthfeel. Tastes like I’m chewing on a sweet resin candy bar. Has a sweet punch in the face pine, gregarious sweet caramel, and spank the monkey finish making me want more. Overall this is a great brew fresh. Haslinger (640), Syracuse, New York, USA May 6, 2008 Updated: Mar 6, 2009bottle, I was not impressed by this at all. I thought it was incredibly bland and do not think it belongs in the top 50, I was also not at all blown away by the supposed huge amount of hops.I got mainly malty taste with a bit of hops, I’m not sure if I got a bad bottle or this beer is just very overrated. I would like to try again to see if my opinion still stands but as of now I would not buy this again tomthompson89 (1459), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 5, 2008 Shared with John from Churchkey and a few others, Dark amber colornose is ALL hops!!!! flavor is similar but nicely balanced juicy hops with some malts there in the back to balance it, fantastic brew. xnoxhatex (1305), Grand Rapids/Chicago, Michigan, USA May 5, 2008 I have had this on tap and in bottle many times and I am now finally putting my rating to RB from a 22oz bomber thanks to Holdenn for picking this up from the brewery for me. Slight cloudy orange/dark amber with large, creamy, long lasting off-white head and lots of lacing, settles to a pancake head, pretty beautiful. Aroma is very fresh citrus hops and bubblegum with caramel, very enticing. Flavor big pine and citrus with sweet caramel, alc, bubblegum, all the while settling to a nice gooiness on my tongue. Full, creamy body. So well balanced and yet such a hop bomb. Three floyds can make all the Helles and Alpha Kongs they want as long as they never stop making this wonderful beer. WinoInTraining (104), Longmont, Colorado, USA May 3, 2008 Damn! I love IPA, and this one just kept giving. Rich golden amber honey color. Light opacity. Amazing nose. Sweet floral aromas, with layered, almost tropical fruit and aromas. Pine, guava, papaya, even a touch of watermelon. Gorgeous creamy, soft texture. Golden raisin, coriander, delicate malt, papaya, and of course, HOPS. Lingering, mouth-coating richness without being heavy. touch of nuttiness on the finish. Decievingly smooth and easy for and Imperial IPA. Panzerfaust (393), Santiago, Chile May 3, 2008 Thanks to <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/View-User-13456.htm>sprinkle for this one. I’m eternally in doubt with you, sir!
Appearance shows a hazy dark orange pour beautifully crowned with a nice medium white head that diminishes slowly and leaves a thick film and lace.
Aroma is very, very hoppy, intense with citrusy notes of lemon, lime, grapefruit, herbal notes of cannabis, hay, pine, resin and touches of eucaliptus, pommegranate and pineapple.
Flavor is intensely bitter, extreme, citrusy taste with a very malty touch of honey in the background. It reminds me of a dark tea with lemon and honey but with an overwhelming attacking bitterness in the end. Fantastic. Notes of green tea, yerba mate, cannabis, grapefruit... extremely bitter. I could never drink a whole bomber by myself. My 220 ml sample was just fine.
Big body, juicy texture. HIgh carbonation. Good alcoholic presence. The finish is hoppy and astringent leading to a massive hoppy aftertaste that reveals a new dimension of flavors. Another great extreme American Micro. Never tried such a hoppy beer before.... and I love it. mgoy (343), Oak Brook, Illinois, USA May 2, 2008 Updated: May 5, 2008Graduation weekend in Bloomington. Three Floyds Dreadnaught Imperial IPA is a red-amber beer with a very small copper tinted head. The aroma is full of citrus and sweet hops and the flavor matches the aroma with a dry finish and strong aftertaste. This is a very nice beer, loaded with hops, but not enough to take away from the other characteristics. BossHossBikes (147), Tennessee, USA May 1, 2008 Bottle. The pour is a rich, deep copper with a pale head, decent lacing. The aroma is really intense in pine and grapefruit. The pine is extremely sharp, creating somewhat of a sharp tinge at the back of the sinus. But not an unpleasant one, at least for me. The flavour, wow, so much hops but also so much malt. It’s a blast of flavour but so balanced. The sharp pine and grapefruit flavours are well mixed with a sweet toffee and caramel. As it sits on the tongue, very woody and floral notes arise. The finish has lots of wood, pine, grapefruit, caramel, toffee... wow, so much flavour. None of the flavours overhwelm each other. They all co-exist in harmony. It’s the most balanced, yet the most intense Imperial IPA I’ve had, so far. This is mind-blowing. This is seriously amazing. I wish I bought more than just one bottle at DLD 08.
