GMCC2181 (845), Bear, Delaware, USA Feb 1, 2008 Updated: Apr 9, 2008Bottle, poured a nice red/amber color. Small white head that left a nice lacing around the glass. Smelled hoppy with a burst of citrus. "Once it hits your lips" flavor takes over your taste buds. You can taste the mango! Realy sweet, yet not girly or candy sweet. It still has a nice bite from the bitterness. Perfect texture, easy to drink. It was the great beer I was looking for and did not dissapoint at all. Best DIPA out there! Thanks Josh!*****UPDATE****Josh recently sent me a fresh bottle, cant get any better IMO! Goodgrief (1144), Middletown, Delaware, USA Jan 30, 2008 May 2006 - Now this is a big beer! Beer poured a pale yellow color, nice big head and lacing all over the place. The aroma and flavor was big pine, HUGE grapefruit and a lot of bitterness to complement the a lot of sweetness going on. Really thick syrupy-like mouthfeel. I can see why the hopheads dig it and whilst I didn’t think I’d enjoy it...I really did. valpoaj (362), Valparaiso, Indiana, USA Jan 28, 2008 Updated: Sep 1, 2008Rating #200. Poured from a bomber. Pours a murky orange, but there’s a bit of clarity that I’m seeing that others apparently aren’t. Not much head, but this was a fairly weak pour on my part. Aroma is just great...fruity hops dominate, and not being an IBU freak, the aspect of hops I appreciate most is the aroma, and this did not disappoint in the least bit! Definitely getting the peach aroma listed in the description along with some grapefruit and other citrus fruits, and a bit of piney hops in there as well. I think the wide range of hop aromas is what set this one over the top, and in a good way. Flavor is very crisp and clean, and FFF got a bit of malt in there to offset the crazy hops, and this malt is what makes this beer one to talk about. The malt backbone is balanced by beautiful levels of citrus hops: grapefruit, orange and lemon dominate, and the hop bitterness is at a solid, but not obscene level, throughout. Mouthfeel is pretty heavy and oily, but pleasant. Not much alcohol to speak of, and the bitterness is there at the finish, but in a very good way that just keeps you wanting to keep sipping until its gone. I left disappointed after trying my first Alpha King...but I’ll be singing the praises of the Dreadnaught for some time to come...great job FFF!
Updated 9/1/08 - Fresh Bottle - Just had to add to my rating the amazing level of pineapple aroma that came out in the most recent bottle I opened...wow...this is one fine beer!!! Sir+Drinksalot (30), Iowa, USA Jan 27, 2008 Nice and heavy IIPA. Just about perfect in every way. Hops and floral intenseness that smacks you like Walker: Texas Ranger. POW! SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Jan 27, 2008 Updated: Feb 29, 200822 oz. bottle - no dread here as i cracked this open with much anticipation; cloudy orange with no head; thick aromas with thick hop and malt mix, but also lots of sweetness; tons of flavor that drinks smooth and not a hint of bitterness; slight alcohol burn and some nutty character; texture doesn’t disappoint as it’s very creamy and like the dark lord, has a velvety touch to it; delish CelticBrew (676), The Crystal Coast, North Carolina, USA Jan 26, 2008 Thanks DrBayern (Much mahalo Matt!!!) Pours extremely hazy, medium to dark medium copper, formed little to no foamy head. Aroma strong of hop and pine resins. People, we’ve entered the Holy of Holies! Grapefruit and hops prevail, here we go!! Flavour is full bodied, grapefruit, wet forrest hops and pine resins. This beer is truly a gift from God, I would love to try this wonderful ale on tap and/or cask. Three Floyds has done it, beer at its finest!! illidurit (851), Santa Cruz, California, USA Jan 26, 2008 This beer falls a hazy pale orange into my snifter, topped with a nice 3 finger head. Incredible lacing and good retention.
Sweet grapefruit, pine sap, biscuity malt, some sweeter citruses like tangerine and orange on the nose.
Hops obviously control the show here, but the range of hop flavors keeps it from being overly one-dimensional. Obviously grapefruit has a strong presence, as well as orange, citrus zest, and maybe even peach. A decent amount of malt futilely fights the whirlwind of hops.
The carbonation really is perfect. I can’t imagine a more finely carbonated IPA. I spent about as much time swirling the beer around the glass and watching the cascades of lacing form and dissolve as I did drinking! Mesmerizing stuff. Great brew. VikingHammer (362), Lynnfield, Massachusetts, USA Jan 22, 2008 Pours a orange brown with a small, mostly diminishing off-white head. Citrus hop aroma. Flavor is a lot of hops that is nicely balanced with malty sweetness. Perfect amount of hops for my liking. Sweet to bitter with a long finish. Awesome Double IPA.
