A hophead’s dream beer. This Imperial India Pale Ale has an opening salvo of mango, peach and citrus hop aromas that sit atop a pronounced caramel malt backbone. Although Dreadnaught is a strong and intensely hoppy ale, its complex flavors is both smooth and memorable. 9.5% ABV, 100 IBUs.

UPDATED: APR 27, 2012 Incredible. Simply incredible. Awesome sweet ruby grapefruit up front, lots of bitter piney hops, and a long, citrusy, yet dry finish. Perfectly balanced DIPA. It’s laughing at me.

Bottle pour. Semi-opaque, orange-peach color in glass with foamy white head that leaves consistent lacing. Lush nose of orange sherbet, caramel and restrained pine. Some tropical fruit in the background. Unexpectedly subtle, but nonetheless, inviting. Does improve on warming. Medium to full body. Huge hop presence. Creamy orange, fresh squeezed grapefruit and slight resinous bite. More sweet than bitter, but plays the full gamut of flavors. Complimentary malt and yeast backings, brings caramel and some straw to the profile. Finishes dry, with lingering orange rind. Enveloping, without being unctuous, on the palate. High ABV never distracts. This is first rate hop juice.

Fresh bottle. Pours clear orangish/amber with tall white frothy head. Aroma is tropical, citrusy. I like the stone fruit inclusions here. Peach shines through. Taste is great mix of those fruits with some clearly defined hop notes - right amount of bitter, tart, resin - with that caramel malt kicking in at the end. Smooth and almost syrupy. Sweet finish.

On cask at Copenhagen Beer Celebration. Can not remember the finer tones, but this one was too much for me. Not the pleasant, refreshing taste I want from an IPA, no matter if it is called Dreadnaught or not.

Pours a slightly murky golden-orange, nice fluffy white head that breaks into fine lacing. Aromas is a hop bouquet. Loaded with pine and resin, citrus peels galore...lemon, orange, grapefruits. And some hints of sugary sweetness. Taste is just as bold. Lots of tang in the way of the lemon/orange peel....moderate bitterness initially, but becomes more pronounced as it warms. Alcohol is almost completely hidden among the sticky sweet malt bill. Solid DIPA, one that keeps me happy as a local!
