This beer, created in honor of Henry Chinaski, was a collaboration between Three Floyds and Jonathan Cutler of Piece Brewery. It’s delicate, spicy, smoked character is derived from a portion of smoked and rye malts. Also brewed by Barnaby&Chris to piss Nick off ;)

Admin Note: Formerly known as "Ham on Rye"

FFF’s bonus beer at the CBS Brewpub Shootout, in Chicago. Poured a hazy, brownish amber, with a modest, off white, fine bubbled foam to the head, and spots of lacing. The aroma was immediately smoky-wood cured bacon, with a little spicing, and light sweetness. Ditto for the flavor, with the smoked meat notes showing more character, coupled with a moderately bitter and dry presence. Nicely done Rauch Bock.

tap - Pours amber brown with some haze. The aroma is of course smoky. Mmm... sausage. It tastes of sweet, smoky caramel malt. The smoke is ample but the malt also comes out nicely as this brew warms. It’s medium bodied with a smoky finish. Tasty.

Draught at Piece BrewPub: Faint aroma of malt with a hint of rye. Poured amber/orange in color with a tiny, white head around the edges only. Clear. Sparkling. Flavor is lightly sweet. tastes of malt, rye, light smoke, and light smoked meat. Medium body. Slightly dry texture. Soft to average carbonation. Malt and slight smoke finish is slightly dry. Disappointing from two brewers I usually like.

On tap at Chumley’s - Lafayette, IN. Pours a clear darkened amber, with a superfine off-white head. Campfire smokiness. Pig bacon, sweet almond bark, and candied smoked fish. Flavor is decent. Browned bacon, burnt pecan wood, and fired wood-oven pizza. Nice browned thick malts underneath the smoke. Great balance with some juicy hops on the finish. Nearly enough smoke intensity for me, so this gets good marks.

On tap at Finch’s in Bloomington, IN. Dark amber in color and a small, quickly dissipating head. Nice smoky flavor... malts, and hints of wood. Not much complexity here, more of a one note beer. It’s a decent note, but overall I wasn’t too impressed.

On tap at the Three Floyds Brewpub.
Drank this with their Smoked Turkey sandwich. A pretty damn good combination. Reddish/brown in color with a thin head. Aroma is obviously strong smoke. That’s about it, mostly smoke. The flavor has a solid smoke presence in balance with other spices and malty rye flavors. A good smoked beer.

On tap at Three Floyds. Pours orangish with an off-white head. Aroma is of smoked ham, malt, hops, and grain. Taste is big on the smoky ham flavor. There is also malt and a fair amount of grain. Has a decent hop flavor to it as well. The meat flavors aren’t overpowering, and they blend well with the malt and hops. Lingering taste of hops and smokiness. Drinks easy, but it was pretty damn heavy. I enjoy smoked beers, and this one is solid. The price was right, and it was tasty.

A] Smoky. Rye kind of lost and mingled among this. More of a campfire smoke to me than meatiness, but sure, I’ll say ham. [A] More or less red. Brownish. Very white head on top. Imperial pint for $5. Winner. [F] Rye comes together more here, with smoke, and eventually hops. Non-offensive, but not particularly my thing. [P] More medium to full bodied. Sits kind of thick with low carbonation. Smoky hop linger. [O] I liked blunderbuss more. Thought it was tad meatier, more interesting, more flavorful. This is a nice smoked. Nice collaboration with Piece.

On tap at piece, glad I got to try this as it’s the first bukowski book I read. ours hazed amber with white head. Flavors are sweet caramel, rye, and mild smokey bacon character. Med body, fizzy mouth feel. Touch too sweet with not enough ham and rye!

On tap @ Piece on saturday. Pours a dark brown with a thin, light tan head. Smoky aroma. Flavor is of a smoked ham on rye sandwich, ha ha ha also a slightly sweet, with hints of vanilla body. Finish is slightly bitter, with the smoky notes lurking in the background. Unique taste.
