ChrisThomson (378), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Nov 8, 2009 650mL bottle from DK. Great beer, up there with Behemoth. Pours beautiful dark amber with lasting white head. Nose of caramel with floral hops. Silky body, with caramel sweetness upfront, brown sugar, and nice piney hop finish. BuckeyeBoy (1639), Boise, Idaho, USA Nov 3, 2009 Bottle Thanks to ditmier for sharing. Pours out a amber topped with a off white head. Aroma was of caramel, floral hops, brown sugar and some rich malts. Taste was much like the aroma. Lots of the caramel sweetness. I think this needed a little time. kosko20 (302), Bemidji, Minnesota, USA Oct 30, 2009 Pour is dark orange gold, no head. Aroma is sweet, alcohol, fruits, caramel and earthy hops. Flavor is spicy bitter, sweet and sour (nice combo). Palate is strange, thin but decent. Overall its a good collaboration. daknole (2802), Plantation, Florida, USA Oct 29, 2009 Reddish pour. Small head. Aroma and flavor has tons of hoppy sweetness. Not quite as good as I thought it would be. yobdoog (1420), Woodridge NY, New York, USA Oct 27, 2009 Thick body, viscous pour, almost no head. Aroma is pretty big. Some alcohol, caramel and a some oily hops. Citrus hops and some bread. Faint spice and dark fruit flavor with a lot of sticky sweetness and hops. corby112 (671), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 26, 2009 Pours a very dark ruby red/chestnut brown color with bright ruby red hues when held to a light source and a 2.5 finger frothy yellowish light beige head. Completely opaque. Excellent retention, only slowly fading into a thick cap that lasts throughout. Sporadic spots and rings of lacing are left behind.
Sweet yet earthy aroma with lots of leathery caramel malt, rye, alcohol, dark fruit, port, subtle floral hops and spice. This is a very interesting smelling barleywine that is not all malt and alcohol. There is a sweetness and creaminess that I can’t quite put my finger on but I like it! It might be the citrus and floral hops along with the alcohol balancing out the musty earthy malt profile but I can’t say for sure.
Pretty hop forward up front, especially for the style with lots of earthy, floral bitterness and sweet citrus notes which are a very nice compliment to the sweet alcohol, smokey, leathery malt. There is a bit of toasty nutty flavor as well as the leathery, musty maltiness mentioned above. Subtle hints of dark fruit, mostly raisin, fig and prune. The wheat aspect is slightly subdued with only the slightest hint of ripe banana but the spicy citrus notes blend perfectly with heavy dose of citrusy, floral hops. The alcohol is present in the flavor but there is hardly any alcohol warmth, making this dangerously drinkable at 10.4%.
Not one of the several flavors in this very complex brew overpowers the other, rather they just bounce back and forth off of each other and I’m picking up something new with each sip. Perhaps the bitterness from the hops up front are a little powerful but I actually love that and wish more barleywines followed suit. It provides excellent balance and a nice counter to the strong alcohol and malt flavors that tend to dominate beers in this style. I loved this beer an am looking forward to trying Oatgoop! Highly recommended!
Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA Oct 25, 2009 Bottle. Pours an amber body with an off white head. Huge etoh latent fruit and grain like cereal bread notes. Viscous caramel and grape with a moderate warming. Decent enough despite the high etoh body. JanVittrup (138), København V, Denmark Oct 25, 2009 Served for bday brunch.
Was wondering how Three Floyds would handle a Barley(wheat) wine, since Three Floyd is my absolute favorite hop composers, and since the Barley Wines I tried so far had very low hop. This is at the extreme other end, and it is not really becomming. Powerfull sweetness and powerfull bitterness is too much for me.
