3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Treebs (733) - , Illinois, USA - OCT 20, 2012Had on tap at Stout Barrel House. Served in a snifter.
A: Pours a solid apricot color with a thin white head head forming on the pour. It recedes to a thin film that leaves some sticky sheets of lace.
S: Candied oranges and tangerines with a sweetened cereal grain malt body balancing it out. Nice lemon and lime zest to give a bit of kick. This smells like a big DIPA as opposed to a barley wine.
T: The taste is much more malty and yeasty than the nose. Some sweet candied sugar with a grainy malt sweetness make up the body with some yeasty chalkiness that provide some fruity esters. More lemon zest like the nose with some bitter orange peel as well.
M: Medium bodied with a malty body and a medium low carbonation level. Slightly drying as well.
O: This was solid overall, but it didn’t quite know what it was. The nose was extremely fruity and the taste was much more malt forward.

Bottle @ ZeeBra Extreme Beer Festival 2013. Almost clear orange pour. Aroma is fruity alcoholic, resin, pine. Flavor is sweet bitter, intense thick body, well hopped, slightly alcoholic. Huge brew which is almost an IIPA.

Bottle @ ZeeBra. Hold it, this is no barleywine. This is an insane double ipa! Aroma has big big hops, fruity and dry, some caramel and biscuity notes. Flavour has even more hops, subtle malt note to compensate. Awesome beer.

From notes. On tap at brewpub when fresh. Holy s*** is this a barleywine? Hopped to the moon and back. Like everything three floyds does this is hoppy but this is at a new level. If you didnt tell me id say double ipa. The only difference is that this does have a thick body on it. Curious to see what happens with some age after the hops fade.

UPDATED: APR 22, 2013 Bottle... Lightly-hazed orange ale with a tiny, creamy, white head. The fruity aroma wafts a wonderful blend of pink grapefruit and sugar cookie. Full-bodied with a milky mouthfeel and tingly carbonation. Nice, sturdy malt backbone here. The flavor leans sweet - sugar cookie and toffee. Citrus rind bitterness rides a good shotgun, but is strapped in tight and isn’t allowed to bark instructions or touch the steering wheel. Finishes mostly sweet with some citrusy, rindy hop-love provided by old, stale lupulin. This probably had a whole lot more kick about eight months ago. Still a very nice brew. Never been a big fan of over-the-top bitterness anyway.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 PotjeBier (957) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - APR 14, 2013
Bottle, share @ Beer Temple with Countbeer, IluvatarMilan, Kermis and 2 others. Hazy orange color. Little to no head. Aroma’s from the glass: pine/resin, citrus, tropical fruit. Retronasal there’s also some sweetness & skunk. Flavor is light sweet/caramel, with a sourish bitterness. Alcoholfeel is rather strong, body is medium. Finishes dry, strongly hoppy, bitter. As with the European version I’d have to conclude this is a DIPA rather than a BW.

Bottle. Aroma of herbal, oily hops, sweet malts, citrus peel, spice and tropical fruits. The flavor is the same but sharper and less oily. Reminds me more of a DIPA that has been in the cellar for some time.
