4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: JAN 5, 2014 Pours a bright, opaque sunset orange color with decent carbonation and about a finger length head that dissipates to a thin lacing. Smells of pretty bright, juicy tropical fruits like papaya, guava, and pineapple. Also get some resinous citrus fruits like orange and a slight grapefruit. Nice candied sweetness as well. Smells like a big, sweet, citrusy double ipa. Taste is amazing. Starts with bright, clean citrus fruits like orange and grapefruit with some resinous pine that adds quite a bit of abrasive bitterness. Then melds into a nice carmel/candied sweetness, somewhat bready malt backbone. This gives the fruity hop qualities a more juicy-like flavor. Finish brings a slight abrasive bitterness back, but its subdued compared to some of their other dipas. Along with this comes more of the tropical fruit variety. Pineapple, papaya, and mango stand out as well as a great candied sweetness. Also get just a hint of pine. Just the slightest alcohol burn on the end, but no alcohol to smell or taste, which is impressive for 10.5%. A crisp and somewhat clean, refreshing finish that really makes this beer awesome. High medium body with a creamy and slightly oily mouthfeel from the hops, but still very clean compared to other dipas at this strength. I have very high expectations when it comes to three floyds dipas and this one meets it and then some. Outstanding beer.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle from rabbott, bottled 2/15/16, drunk 3/17/16.
Big, off-white head atop shows strong retention. Light amber-to-copper body shows great clarity and low carbonation visible.
Varied citrus zest, apples, light pineapple and some juicy pine are actually pretty well-restrained on the resin. At the start of the glass, though the beer is still too cold, there’s no sign of the abv, though maybe just a touch of perfume-like alcohol as it starts to warm. Not exactly bursting forth with hop aromatics, but digging deep in to the nose, there’s some canteloupe and light watermelon mixing with pale malts to give a deep fruit juiciness.
Diving in to the glass, the first sip shows lots of orange, caramel and heavily drying pine-mixed-with-alcohol on the finish. Continued sips show more alcohol, light sourness, caramel, increasing bitterness and really not much to enjoy other than the malty texture and mostly engaging carbonation. It does seem like there are remnants of watermelon and other juicy fruits, so I’ll give it some credit there and assume that must have been more enjoyable when fresh, but conversely, this would have been punishingly boozey and resinous when extremely fresh. So again, I’m more a fan of letting 3F’s beer sit for about a month, even if that means missing out on some of the more volatile hop compounds.
With more warming, it continues to get boozier and boozier, the alcohol even loosening up the texture and yet heavily drying the finish. Can barely make it through a glass. I’d try it again when really fresh, on principle, but I’m confident there’s no amount of (hypothetical) fruity/juicy hops that can cover up this heavy citrus, sour resin and intense alcohol. Just no need for this much alcohol.

Tasted from draft. Pours hazy gold with white head. Aroma is citrus and some dank resin. Taste is well balanced with great clean bitter flavor. Flavors of melon and citrus fruit. Excellent beer but I think I like Zombie Dust better.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Golden body with a frothy, off-white head. Aroma of peach, apricot, toasted grain, tropical fruits, citrus, orange. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety/sticky texture, lively carbonation. Big fruit taste of peach, orange juice, citrus. Only slightly hot in the finish. Sweet for an imperial IPA (unless I kept the bottle too long). Otherwise, good stuff.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: NOV 10, 2015 Poured from the bomber, light orange with a white 2 finger collar. I had bought a bomber a few days ago and noticed that I really liked it more toward the last few drinks than I did early. So I went back today, bought the last two warm, put them on ice when I was at work, and enjoyed them afterword. Lots of grapefruit & tropical, tons of strong, mouth watering, really nice beer, glad I don’t have to drive across state lines to get it.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
22 ounce bottle, bottled on 9/22/15. Just bought it last weekend so I wasn’t able to try this fresher. Served in a tulip, the beer pours a slightly hazy golden/orange color with a couple inch off-white head that stayed around for a very long time. There’s also a lot of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells mostly like citrusy (tropical fruit, mango, citrus peel) and pine hops, along with some bready malt. Taste is similar to the aroma, but there’s also the addition of some candied oranges and dankness. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it’s slick and a bit creamy with a good amount of carbonation. I thought this was pretty good, I’d like to try it again in the future.
