On tap at the brewpub. This is a mix of Robert the Bruce and Alpha King bourbon barrel aged with star anise and orange peel. Very dark brown and not even clse to clear. A small tan head is more of a ring. Big anise in the nose isncludes red licorice. That dominates the nose when served cold. Oh my is there a lot going on in the flavor. So much malt and there is that anise. Orange peel adds complexity and a distinct bitterness. There is also some softer cocoa. Agaon, so much going on! This is a wild ride that is totally unique. Somehow it fits here. It is unconventional and untameable. damned good, too.

On tap at the FFF Brewpub. This is part of their rededicated barrel-aging program and Im grateful to try it. This beer pours a deep, hazy maroon with some flecks of orange. There is little to no head, and what little head there is settles along the rim of the glass, a small swirl floating towards the middle. Aroma is a strong punch of licorice. Some notes of orange and a twinge of breakfast sausage, which was unexpected. Some caramel notes from the Robert The Bruce tries to peak out over the overwhelming licorice. Flavor is again heavy on the licorice with some smoke, caramel, and toffee. I get the Good and Plenty feel that Adam got. There is a light citrus and citrus hops toward the back end of the flavor. Must be the Alpha King gasping for air. The barrel comes out a bit towards the finish. The body is almost creamy, with complimentary carbonation. Finishes with some barrel and some booze. This is an interesting experiment that Im not sure ended up being succesful.

Poured on draft into a snifter. Appearance is dark brown with a khaki colored head. Aroma is loaded with star anise and barrel. Taste is dark roasted malt, anise, and orange peal. This beer is very complex with many layers of flavors.

FoBAB 2011. Murky brown with a thin head. Wow thatís a bag of dadís black licorice right there. So much anise. Bitter anise flavors. Thin black licorice water. I like black licorice, but not in this beer. Not good. 7/3/6/3/12

Draft on tap at the brewpub (Munster, IN). Odd combo of brewpubs for me tonight on my "Beer Travel" weeknight. If youíre close to me, maybe youíll know because of what happens tomorrow. Pours a murky brownish pour, lighter with some glowing edges, maybe a dirty hue with a decent frothy offwhite head that dies to a ring clinger. Small lacing. Aromas are some "Jesus Christ that is anise" appeal, the orange peel comes through, some toffee, oak, and spirit. The anise is overpowering.. And I donít even like anise so itís not a welcome addition. Licorice, oak, toffee, some lingering orange rind oils. Initial is lighter end of medium bodied with a hot spirit hheat up front, oak and Bourbon, moving into heavy lingering anise, black licorice, Good n Plenty. Some orange peel, touches of toffee, faint cocoa. Fairly thin and killed out by the barrel. Middle throws more anise and orange peel, the combo really is deadly strong and accurate. Itís not hard to describe. Thin, anise ridden, some orange peel oils. The base beers donít show much, perhaps some touches of sweet and toasty malts, a faint faint cocoa essence.. Really, this beer is powerful, thin, and not the flavor profile I enjoy. Wow. Iíd rather drink Brandy Alpha Klaus than this. Aroma gets a 7 for power, not for "Like". If you like Licorice/Anise, this is for you.. And I donít doubt it grabbing a lofty score from those that do. But this beer is not very good to those that donít enjoy such flavors. Bourbon throws heat and some flavor that gets covered up by the anise.. Kinda just interferes. Man, this is odd. The orange peel probably boosts it several points. Otherwise, this beer would lose a lot. Interesting yes.. But good? Depends if you love Anise! Overall, the beer is harsh on the palate, lacks balance, and loses any sort of focus. Ok.. Mediocre really. A rare miss in the barrel world from Three Floyds.

FoBAB. Interesting blend of Bruce and Alpha King. Pours brown with off white head. A TON of anise - I mean ton in the flavor and aroma. You have to like anise to stand this beer. Decent.

On tap; pour is murky dark brown with an off white head head that rings the glass, with some light haze present. Spotty lacing is present in this snifter. The nose is dominated by the anise. Warning : I hate anise. With that said, I can deal with it if its just a subtle element. Iíve enjoyed imperial stouts that contain it. Its not subtle at all, though. I fucking hate this beer. The anise is the dominate note up front, thereís a touch of vanilla, oak, bourbon notes, caramel, and im not really getting the alpha king hop profile because.... the anise rounds it out rather ridiculously. So : congrats if youíre one of those stupid people that love anise. Youll probably love this turd. Cheers.

On tap at brewpub pours a murky dark brown with a small tan head. Whoa aroma is heavily dominated by anise with slight orange peel. The taste is similar with a heavy dose of anise slight orange with caramel and oak on the finish. I didnít get any Alpha King here and very little RtB, as the anise was so overpowering.

On tap. Slightly cloudy medium brown with thin beige head. Aroma heavy anise. Taste initially quite sweet with citrus and caramel malts, then the anise comes in and clubs the Robert the Bruce, Alpha King and citrus into submission. Really becomes almost an anise liqueur. Finish anise and slight hops. Slightly syrupy palate.

An odd beer.

Draft at Brewpub 12/5/11. Very dark black, think tan head. Morot oil consistency. This is very heavy on the anise black - licorice taste. Pretty much overwhelms any other taste this has to offer. Not really digging it, wasnt a huge fan of anise and thats really all this one had to offer.
