3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Alpha Klaus is very piney and sticky and actually tastes like drinking a christmas tree. This was much subdued compared to the non whisky version. still excellent, but i prefer the regular to this although this was very nice and mellow. a very different beer than AK, but still very much a FFF brew. enough alcohol presence to complement the whisky character which i thought was well integrated in this brew.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: OCT 3, 2005 Poured with a black body and a yellowish head. Sweet bourbon and vanilla and chocolate. The barrel aging dominated the beer. The taste was overwhelming with bourbon. There was also chocolate and roasted almonds. However, the original character is nearly destroyed by the barrel aging. Iíll take the regular AK.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Great porter on every level...The aroma of roasted malt, smoke, wood, raisins, and whiskey. The wonderful coloration...nearly black...The intense flavors of dried fruits, dates, raisins, roasted caramel, molasses. and whiskey...The hop bitterness more prominent in the lingering finish. Perfect!

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
This porter is a thing of beauty - not in appearance really, black and nearly devoid of head. But the aroma... it still maintains the rich, sweet malts, but the hop bitterness is subdued and replaced by a mild bourbon aroma. Itís not overwhelming as in some whiskey barrel aged beers, but, along with the alcohol scent, nicely complement the malt. This is almost wine-like in the mouth, tasty and warm and needing to be rolled around a bit before swallowing. The flavor is a masterful blend of porter and whiskey, the hop bitterness emerging lightly at the finish. Excellent drink.
