On tap at brewpub. Pours a dark brown. Not the typical blackish color with purple highlights of baltics I’m familiar with. Smell and taste is chocolate, coffee and a nice roast taste from the malts I guess. Good mouthfeel and flavor. Again, I would’ve never guessed this at 9%. Decent beer, but the Decimator was my beer of choice.

On tap at FFF. Dark brown pour with a tiny brown head that dissipated quickly, but left a little lacing. Licorice and coffee in the nose. Roasted malt on the tongue, with some coffee and chocolate. A bit thin on the palate. Very tasty porter, however, wish it was served in an Imperial pint.

On tap at the FFF brewpub. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is a deep, nice chocolate aroma. Strong and creamy with moderate roast. The chocolate kind of overpowers any other aroma but it is a really nice chocolate. Relatively thick, creamy body, smooth as hell with a nice chocolate flavor. Alcohol hidden well. I liked this a lot. Probably one of the best examples of the style I’ve had.

Sampled on-tap at the 3F brewpub on Dark Lord Day Eve. Appearance: Unassuming black body offset by a ring of beige-colored bubbles. Smell: Highly roasty nose with a strong scent of burnt coffee beans and lesser notes of chocolate-covered fruit and licorice. Taste: As you’d expect from the nose, it’s very roasty and gives you a big taste of burnt malt and coffee. Charred sugar. Handful of grains and dark chocolate followed by oven-roasted raspberries and prunes. A fair amount of roasty, earthy bitterness along the way. Finishes expectedly roasty with a whiff of smoke. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel. Drinkability: Plenty tasty! A fine baltic porter from Three Floyds.

DLD 2008: Deep brown with purple highlights, lasting beige head and very good lace. The aroma has notes of caramel, chocolate, prune, grape, toasted and charred malts, grassy and slightly resiny hops, and some coffee esters. The taste is ripe fruit and sweet malt balanced somewhat by some acidity and hop bitterness. The finish displays a hint of coffee and smoke. he mouth feel is medium-bodied and oily smooth with just the right amount of carbonation. A very nice offering that is not hopped to the max.

On tap at Three Floyds and served in a half pint glass. This beer poured a dark brown with a foamy tan head that settled into a thin layer, lingering for most of the glass. A nice coat of lace was left behind. The aroma of the beer was made up of roasted malts, bitter coffee, and a bit of chocolate. The flavor consisted of coffee, bittersweet chocolate, light smoke, and also a hint of earthy yeast. The mouthfeel was full-bodied with minimal carbonation. Tasty and satisfying. Another solid offering from FFF.

Pours a very dark brown with a dinkus tan head that soon reduces to a slender ring around the glass. The aroma is mainly about coffee supported lightly by roasted malt and bittersweet chocolate. It seemed just a bit thin but accurately reflected flavors promised by the nose. A slight hit of alcohol was felt in the back of the throat right at the finish. Pretty decent.

Pleasant surprise to find this new beer being tapped as we walked into the brewpub. Pours a rich roasted brown with a moderate tan head. The nose is all coffee and roasted grain. The flavor also leads with dark rich coffee, roasted grains, and chocolate. The mouthfeel was moderately creamy, a little thin, but very easy drinking and satisfying. The alcohol is big (9%) but undetectable. That might be my only knock against it...I’d like to drink a few of these in one sitting. Very respectable example of the style from this great brewery.

UPDATED: APR 25, 2008 pours black almost no head. Tiny tan head. Aroma mostly coffee...sweetish. Creamy chocolate and coffee flavor. Hides the 9% abv well. Creamy slightly bitter finish. Very pleasant.
