On tap at the brewpub during DLD ’08. Pours black with a thin skin of beige bubbles at the surface. The nose is dry, peaty roasted malt, cocoa and coffee. Medium to full-bodied and oily with soft prickly carbonation and a warm, roasty finish. Peaty chocolate roasted malt with a mild leather-like note at the finish. Another fine brew from Three Floyds.

Draft… DLD’08… Black with a small, creamy, khaki-colored head. The aroma is an earthy bundle of canvas and leather with toasted nuts and, of course, chocolate leading the way. Full-bodied with a skim-milk mouthfeel and fizzy carbonation. Bittersweet mocha flavor. Chocolate covered espresso bean finish. Yum!

UPDATED: JUN 8, 2011 My favorite of the Non-Dark Lord Dark Lord Day beers. WOW! This one is simply delicious all around. Pours a nice, even black with a creamy head. Smells like chocolate and cream. Fantastic creamy texture. Flavor is full of yeast, malt, cream and chocolate, with just a hint of coffee and hops. Everything about this one screams smoothness and balance. Flavors evolves the entire time, with some candy notes coming through. Full bodied all around. This one is just full of chocolate, candy, cream, and coffee, who knew Willy Wonka worked for Nick Floyd?

On draft night before DLD 08. Pours black with a ruby tint and a medium sized light brown head. Aroma of roasted malts, faint coffee beans and cocoa powder. Taste of roasted malt, cocoa powder and sweet chocolate.

On tap at brewpub. Pours a dark brown. Not the typical blackish color with purple highlights of baltics I’m familiar with. Smell and taste is chocolate, coffee and a nice roast taste from the malts I guess. Good mouthfeel and flavor. Again, I would’ve never guessed this at 9%. Decent beer, but the Decimator was my beer of choice.

On tap at FFF. Dark brown pour with a tiny brown head that dissipated quickly, but left a little lacing. Licorice and coffee in the nose. Roasted malt on the tongue, with some coffee and chocolate. A bit thin on the palate. Very tasty porter, however, wish it was served in an Imperial pint.

On tap at the FFF brewpub. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is a deep, nice chocolate aroma. Strong and creamy with moderate roast. The chocolate kind of overpowers any other aroma but it is a really nice chocolate. Relatively thick, creamy body, smooth as hell with a nice chocolate flavor. Alcohol hidden well. I liked this a lot. Probably one of the best examples of the style I’ve had.

Sampled on-tap at the 3F brewpub on Dark Lord Day Eve. Appearance: Unassuming black body offset by a ring of beige-colored bubbles. Smell: Highly roasty nose with a strong scent of burnt coffee beans and lesser notes of chocolate-covered fruit and licorice. Taste: As you’d expect from the nose, it’s very roasty and gives you a big taste of burnt malt and coffee. Charred sugar. Handful of grains and dark chocolate followed by oven-roasted raspberries and prunes. A fair amount of roasty, earthy bitterness along the way. Finishes expectedly roasty with a whiff of smoke. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel. Drinkability: Plenty tasty! A fine baltic porter from Three Floyds.
