4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Presentation: It was poured from a brown 1pt. 6oz bottle into a pint glass. The label lists the abv (6.5%) and the IBUs (55). There is no freshness date however.
Appearance: It pours dark brown and looks nearly black in the glass with some reddish brown highlight. This is topped by and small but long lasting tan foam head. As I drink it slowly settles to a thin film covering and on the way down the glass it makes some nice spotty lace with a few rings of lacing at the top.
Smell: There is a good deep roasted bready maltiness in the nose which is complemented with big coffee and chocolate notes.
Taste/Palate: The body is right on for a big Porter. It brings deep roasted maltiness with loads of coffee notes, as well as dark and milk chocolate notes to the tongue. Hop flavor also adds some decent bitterness. On the plate it feels smooth and little creamy but on heavy at all. It is still well carbonated and very drinkable.
Notes: This is a very well made Porter with good balance all around.

Smells just like fresh espresso coffee beans. Can clearly taste the chocolate and coffee and hazlenut in the malt. The hops come through brilliantly in the end. Fantastic beer!!!! 3HB comes through again!

Bomber. Very dark with red highlights and a nice creamy beige layer. The nose is espresso and is pleadant. Coffee and chocolate are tasted and both are a bit muted. Some nice roastiness and later that becomes more dry. Also, some lactic. Very late some he are noted. They are not big and add mild bitterness. This is pretty solid and it is what it says it is.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
In short: A an over-carbonated sweet nutty ale with a cup of black coffee. Meh.
How: Bottle 22oz, consumed a few months after purchase,
The look: Clear dark mahogany-ruby body topped by a large beige head quickly diminishing to a thin layer of foam and leaving lots of lacings on the glass.
In long: Nose is an old cup of black coffee with notes of milk chocolate bar. Body feels a bit airy because of an excessive carbonation, not a fun beer to keep in mouth. Taste is barley candy, black coffee, surprisingly nutty, ashy burnt cereals, light notes of milk chocolate, toasted brown sugar, awkward acidity coming mostly from the excessive carbonation. A few things didnít work for me in this beer, the nutty milk chocolate clashed with the boring coffee flavor, and the carbonation really didnít help. This Java Sutra is to beer what the missionary position is to the Karma Sutra.
