Rochestafarian n. 1. A beer, malty in nature, brewed to honor Rochester, NY. Like the city’s fine funky music, this sweet, full bodied, slightly bitter brew is sure to sway the soul and bring about a feeling of Irie. 2. One who loves 3HB.

Location: Sampled at Tap NY, 4/27/13

Aroma: The nose is toffee/caramel, some bready malts, earth/pine, and nuts
Appearance: It pours a reddish-amber color with a small beige head
Flavor: The taste is not as sweet as this style normally is, with a decent hop component
Palate: The body is medium, it has a smooth feel and drinks pretty easily
Overall Impression: This one is an interesting example of the style. It seemed more balanced than others, which was a welcome differentiation.

Bomber purchased for $6.79 on sale. This beer looked like a scotch ale, but flavor was off balance. A little too bready and is missing the smoky, malty spiciness of the great American Scotch ales. This one’s easy drinking, though. I gave it a fairly low score, but I took a few points off for the relatively high price.

Bottle. Pours amber with an off white head. Sweet toffee malts, breads notes, and a light earthy bitterness. Smooth, balanced, and drinkable.

Scotch Ales are a style I tend to enjoy, so I really did enjoy this one. Nice and bitter with some definitive malt flavors thrown in as well. Not too over the top but definitely true to the style.

Bomber from Beer Run. Pours a clear dark red color with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of toffee, nuts, raisin, earthy hops. The taste is dark fruits, toffee, earthy hops. Dry, medium bodied, thin, off balance. A disappointment.

Bombers from Capone’s and Wegman’s. Pours turbid ruby reddish with minimal off-white head. Nose is earthy nut browny, caramel malt. Tastes metallic, earthy, pretty bad actually. Finishes medium in palate heft with some earthy metallic notes. The first miss from these excellent brewers.

Ron shared a bottle with me weeks ago, I know I rated it but don’t know what happened here! This is not my favorite style, and this, for better or worse did not seem true to style. Was malty but a bit more bitterness than I’d expect. Also lower in alcohol than most of these, which are saved by that. So I probably won’t seek this one out again.

Bottle. This had some malty sweetness in the aroma and the flavor, but I was suprised by how thin the body was. Not a full bodied brew. It was just ok.
