Cask at The Holy Inadequate, Etruria. A black colour with a creamy beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate and some caramel sweetness. Taste of roasted malt, burnt toast, chocolate, coffee and again, some caramel sweetness. Medium bodied and a creamy texture. A nice roasted finish. A good, drinkable traditional stout.

Cask @ Three Tuns Inn, Bishops Castle. A great stout with dry coffee, a delicious sweetness and a smooth drinkable texture. Very nice.

Dark brown, fruity, liquoricey nose is so old school. Taste is the same - deep fruity and slightly tangy old ale taste. A step back in time, this has educational value if nothing else. For drinking pleasure, I’m really not sure where this fits - it’s like a light-bodied old ale.

Mid black with a good sized bubbly tan covering.
Nose is chocolate, vanilla, light malt bill, brown sugars.
Taste comprises cocoa, light roast malts, earthy cocoa, leather, vanilla essence.
Medium bodied, fine carbonation, dry lightly roasted closure.
Decent enough stout affair.

Cask at the 16th Egham Beer Festival. Egham has a reputation for showcasing some of the newest breweries, but in this case they have opted for one of the oldest. A glossy black pour with a cream head; toffee aroma; rich body with some coffee flavours; and a gently bitter finish. A well made stout.

Cask. Black with a mocha head that recedes quickly. Blackberry and roasty aroma. Tastes similar. Dark hedgerow berries, roast, lots of liquorice and some chocolate. Quite a creamy and oily mouthfeel. Pretty nice stout.

On cask @ Uxbridge Arms, Chasetown - Black body with a frothy tall dark tan head. Smooth roast aroma with caramel and toffee under the roast. Sweet sugary taste with some coffee in there. Medium-light mouthfeel with a nice crisp dry finish. Enjoyed.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 24 Nov 2012) Black colour with foamy, beige head. Roasted, malty nose with notes of black coffee, caramel, ashes and slightly brunt aromas. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, caramel, burnt sugar, black coffee and a generous roasty bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with just a touch of sweetness. Well made and very nice stout.

Bottled, 500ml from Hop & Stagger Bottle Shop, Bridgnorth, Shrops. Black with brown head. Dark, chocolate malts with a burnt liquorice, treacle snap type flavour. Quite sharp, with a slight metallic edge, but also full and bitter. Fairly decent.

Cask @ The White Horse Old Ale Festival. The pour’s black with a small espresso head. The nose is charred grain, hints of chocolate, ash and toasted malts. The taste is chocolate and caramel cake. Charred wood and ash. Soft dry, slightly bitter finish. Well-rounded, smooth. Overall, an understated, well-made stout. Good stuff.
