Cask (backlog). Ambery brown colour, small head. Aroma is mild toasted malts, resin, some nutty notes as well as mild chocolate. Flavour is malty, sugary, caramelly toffeeish and some nuttiness. Nice chocolate, nuttiness and mild toasted notes in the finish.

Dark ruby red ale with a nice frothy and creamy head. The aroma is a bit dry but the warm fruits are evident in its flavour.

First tasted this in the Salt Cot, Saltcoats (JDW) in November 2007. Cask, handpump dispense and in spot on condition. Clear dark garnet red in colour with a thick creamy white head. Strong aroma of vanilla fudge, long in intensity. Thick creamy texture to the mouthfeel and superb lacing. Dark malt gives a moist maltloaf base with sweet vanilla fudge and fruity black grapes. Slight hint of spicy hop resins detected in the brief aftertaste which fade fast. Finish is smooth and malty with vanilla pod and warming winey port flavours coming through. A superb Ruby Ale which reminded me slightly of Bath Festivity. This was a popular guest ale, highly recommended.

Cask conditioned - handpump - JDW Northampton. A very dark brown colourd beer with an off white head and some lacing. The aroma is pretty paper thin and actually has papery notes. The taste has milky coffee notes, a bit like camp coffee. It has qualities but everything seems thin and underdeveloped.

Cask conditioned @ Giddy Bridge (JDW), Soton. Sweet maltyness toffeeish toasty flavours. Very slight earthy bitterness. I didnt particularly enjoy this. Not really malty or rich enough to mull over and not drinkable enough to refresh.

A Mes rate: Cask at the Wenlock
Dark semi translucent brown with a thin bubbly off white head. Coffee, liquorice and chocolate aroma. Flavour follows on in the same vein but doesnt quite sit right. Slight metallic notes too. Coffee finish with a lick of hops.

Cask @ The Wenlock. Deep amber with an off white head. Sweet candy malt nose. Lots of different flavours, cocoa, raisin and liquorice with a nutty malt finish. Not bad as it goes.
