A very dark brown almost black with a smoth light tan head. Aroma is mild, some roasted malts. Taste mild sweet maltiness and some roast nuttiness. A pleasant mild ale.

[Cask at the Belle Vue, High Wycombe] Vivid dark red - really red, none of your ruby-black nonsense - with a thick yellowy-beige head. Definite blackcurrant with some vanilla and caramel. A little smoke too but on the sweet side and rather thin. OK.

Dark with a tan head. Roasted malt with a dry finish, perfectly nice but quite thin and boring.

Cask at The White Lion, Covent Garden, London. Dark brown beer with a tanned head. Malty aroma with (maybe) some chocolate notes. A bit malty, and a bit hoppy flavour. Really a thin and boring beer.

500ml Bottled conditioned: shared with a mate on 15 Feb during a random beer tasting evening. Looked fine: really dark, almost black like its name. good full tan coloured head of foam sat on each half-pint glasses. The smell was weaker than I expected: notes of dark chocolate and coffee, but not overly strong. The taste a more roundly roasted, malty feel than the aroma hinted at. Not as sweet either, semi-bitter maybe. The body was OK to thin: thin when looking at the colouring but OK if you are thinking about the the 3.9% ABV the bottle has (0.6% more than the cask version). All in all, not bad.

On cask @ the Hawes Inn, South Queensferry. Pours opaque black with a cream head. The nose has a very faint hint of the chocolate that I’d expected. There’s also a hint of nuttiness as the name implies but overall it is more of malt. The taste is pretty much the same. The palate is fairly well balance with a medium structure and creamy texture and a reasonably clean finish. Overall, nothing special.

Cask at Red Lion in Earlswood. Didn’t expect much but it was okay, better than I thought it would be. Burger was ok too. Little one had scampi which was also pleasant. Wife’s chicken looked nice, she offered me some but I declined. We all had chips. You still listening?

Cask at The White Lion, Covent Garden, London. Dark amber beer with a small beige head. Malty chocolate aroma, caramel, roasted, some grapes and pears, some cocoa. Malty licorice flavor, caramel, grapes, raisins, citrus, a bit vinous. Thin and not very exciting.

Cask at the Carpenters Arms, Windsor - 22/12/12. Very dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that retains well. Nose is dark malt, liqourice, touch of wood and spice. Taste comprises roast malts, liqourice, light tar, blackcurrant. Light to medium in body with soft carbonation and smooth on the palate. A decent enough mild.
