Bottle from Waitrose. Pour clear as a bell, a nice chestnut - amber colour. A beige head dies away very quickly to nothing. Alcohol is fairly present on the nose with caramel, spiced pumpkin pie, tea and plums. Flavours of raisin, caramel, toffee and tea again. A little bitterness and an oil mouth-feel. Actually very drinkable given the abv.

Bottle at GBBF. Pours red copper with a good, off-white head. Acidic apples aroma. Apples flavours, on the acidic side, but with sweet caramel, too. Not the most complex, but drinkable.

330ml bottle. Small beige head atop a ruddy amber body. Chewy, cakey malts & juicy mid fruit aromas. Quite thick cakey, toffee malt sweetness, more mid fruit notes, slightly woody with a toasty bitterness. Medium body, carbonation & length finish, lingering mid fruit tang.

Bought at Morrisons, Stevenston, Ayrshire in July 2011. 330ml bottle poured a clear tawny red with a good tight foam head, off white in colour. Striking aroma which lasted till the last drop from the glass. Distinct powerful sweet malt with strong overtones of heather honey redolent to the end. Silky smooth mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malt base gives moist christmas cake flavours with strong notes of honey, powdery strawberry milkshake, vanilla and a slight prick of cinammon spice. Brief floral note of dusty hop resins in the short bitter aftertaste indicating this is an English barley wine before normal service is resumed with a return to a vineous powerful malty finish with alcohol warming notes at the end. An excellent end of session tipple and highly recommended

(33 cl bottle from Morrisons, Blackpool) Pours a clear amber with little, white head. Smells of malt with a whiff of banana. Full bodied, medium carbonation, oily texture with a long, alcohol finish. The taste is strongly bitter with prevalent sweet notes and a clear presence of alcohol. A somewhat disharmonic impression with the different taste ingredients competing for attention rather than forming a greater unity.

33 cl bottle, Sheffield, UK. Deep mahogany colour, thin head. Sweet aroma, brown sugar and roasted nuts. Syrupy, sweet, some molasses and a building alcohol finish.

[330ml bottle, Morrisons, Edinburgh] Deep chestnut brown pour. Totally flat, with a single lonely stream of rising carbonation. The label proudly sports the ’bottle conditioned’ tag, but it has actually been filtered and re-seeded, which really doesn’t add much to the equation. Some alcohol comes out on the nose, with sweet caramel and toffee, and a touch of dark stone fruit. Big, warm, fruity malt flavours take over from the start – plums, damsons lead into an increasingly sweet, malty finish. More booze arrives as the beer goes down. It’s remarkably mellow for 7.4%, and is really rather good indeed. Lancashire’s answer to Old Peculier? [20072011]

Bottle. Dark brown and reddish beer with a reasonable head. The aroma is lightly roasted and the flavour is malty and roasted with a bitter finish. Overall a fairly average roasted and fortified flavoured beer.

Bottle Conditioned from Morrisons. Pours a deep ruby colour with a thin white head. No real aroma, the taste is of sweet malt with a dry bitter finish.
