Bottle conditioned. Chestnut colour no head a little sweet malt aroma. Taste is a little caramel, sweet plums and a touch spicey. Has a sour ring through and reminds me a little of a Belgian sour ale. Old ales are one of my favourite styles, but this one was not one of the better ones. Nice enough though.

werent expecting much for 50p from b&m but smells floral, banana, raisin, its a nice deep coppery colour with a creamy foam head, medium sweetness, then lightly bitter and salty, medium body, oily feel, soft carbonation, bitter finish. i probably wont get another but it would have been better chilled. As i finish the bottle there not much yeast left at the bottom.

Clear chestnut colour with a thin quickly fading off white head. Aroma of roasted malts, nuts, caramel, sweaty socks. Thin finish, slight lick of alcohol, meaty, sweet toffee. Not bad but won’t hurry back to it.

Bottled. Beautiful clear deep red appearance. Slightly perfumed and spicy aroma. Has a really mellow smooth palate, with rum, raisin and berry flavours. Doesn’t taste like a 7% beer, very deceptive and very good.

Appearance: Clear amber/copper with cm thick ivory head. Aroma: Fruit cake, vinous, marzipan, mineral and bread. Taste: Low/medium sour and sweetness with low bitterness. Palate: Thick coarse texture, medium body, average carbonation, abrupt dry malty fruit cake finish. Comments: Very good and glass ring lace.

Bottle from Asda, Dunbar. Pours clear copper with a thin white head, doesn’t hang around. Nutty caramel malt aromas, fruit. Sweet taste and thin finish. OK.

Like the sexually deviant Dan Moody of Kitchen Planet this traditional full bodied English old ale should really give me its full attention. But that is not going to happen. This country! I was hoping this would be one red hot scorcher of a beer but it is barely even a half pound cheeseburger. Still, it is a right doppelganger for the colour of Directors bitter and smells of mince pie, gas, Colman’s mustard, arrabriata sauce, Wurthers Originals, scotch egg and Terry’s Chocolate Orange. Leaves lacing like an old woman’s hair. No Lexus, this is barely even a re-badged Rover 100. At one time I might have called this a bit simple but its really just moribund. Ah ha!

Bottle from B&M Stockton. Deep amber with a small cream head. Roasty notes with some caramel and a nice balance between bitter and sweet. Very pleasant, but not too much going on for a beer of this strength.

Bottled. Copper colour with a small beige head. Aroma is caramel malts, some alcohol, mild toasted notes as well as a nice floral and fruity tone to it. Flavour is very similar, with the fuggles coming in really nicely. Also has a bunch of resiny and nutty notes in the flavour. One of the better old ales I’ve had.

Deze fles was helaas niet goed, stinkkaas en mosterd, smaak ronduit vies zurig, wel een kraag
