COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned.
Higher abv version of Nutty Black.
Normally brewed solely for the home market, Daniel Thwaites has broken all the rules with an export strength version of its award winning ale. The same great well rounded flavours and nuttiness lie within but bottles will now leave Lancashire destined for the Far East (Leeds) and even remote areas of the southern hemisphere (such as Watford).

Bottle, Morrisons, Carlisle. Black with ruby hints and an off-white head. Despite being stronger than the cask version it derives from, it doesn’t quite have the same body. Solid malty flavour, with the recognisable Thwaites sweetness just about right. Pleasant carbonation, little evidence of bottle conditioning at the bottom, but no complaints, what with bottled milds being rare, let alone bottle conditioned ones! Cask version is far superior.

Deep ruby against the fire with a fine persisting beige rim. Nose of rusty girders, faint chocolate and grass. Iron filings on rye bread with a sprinkle of choc. Quite a thin grainy beer with some schwarz-like licks. It’s alright.

Pours a dark red-brown with a tight mid-sized beige head, malt, some muscovada and a little plum plus a hint of tartness and a little spice - cinnamon? More malt and dried fruit on the vtongue plus notes of milk chocolate and a little coffee, then a dry fruity finish.

good aroma pleasant. A nice dark appearance and promises of a silky smooth pint. The taste disappointed me. I was expecting more but t tasted a bit diluted. Overall it was ok but not one I would buy again

UPDATED: AUG 25, 2010 Deep ruby colour with a very thin tan lace. Toffee roasted malt and treacle aroma. Thin texture, slight malt flavour. Lacks a full body. Hints of fruit.

500ml bottle. Deep, ruddy dark brown colour with a medium sized, lasting creamy beige head with decent retention & that left a uniform lace. Very delicate background aroma profile, some nut, choc & roast but all hard to get at. Nutty, bready & yeasty flavours with an hint of fruit, lactic chocolate & an empty pasteurised-like quality. Light body, medium carbonation with a choccy, lightly roasted soft & shortish bitterness. Not a bad beer by any means; easy drinking but just too subtle & uneventful for it’s own good in my book.

Mild ale, dark with a red glow, no head. Has a slightly sweet, slightly nutty aroma, less than its name would suggest. The same can be said for its taste.

Really nice black ruby pour with great head. Aroma’s a bit nutty, roasty, and fruity, but more apple than the darker carameled fruits i’d like/expect. Taste is alright, with some nutty biscuit notes and a bit of roast again. Palate is a bit thin, though the carbonation amps it a bit.

errr...nutty: oats and almonds, roastiness, sweet malty texture, some mild chocolate in there and a porter-ish nod. little bland overall

Bottle in a hotel room in London. Dark brown coloured with a medium sized beige head. Light roasted aroma of caramel, nuts and metal. Light roasted flavour of caramel anbd berries. Fruity finish.
