[Tap] Clear light orange pour with almost no head on it. Heavy whiskey aroma. Not much else is detectable in the nose. The taste is much more subtle with regards to the whiskey. Graham cracker, sticky brown sugar and moderately bitter grapefruit hops work well with the booze/whiskey notes. Good balance. Light carbonation.

A strong, woody, fruity barleywine. Pours a deep amber, medium-thin on the palate. Obvious alcohol, but well-balanced with grape, pear, raisin, and subtle hints of milk chocolate. Another complex piece from a promising up-and-coming brewer.

Sampled at FoBAB2013. Pours a hazyed amber color with a small off white head. Aroma of caramel, mild citrus and shallot notes, touches of earth, bourbon, and mild booze. Flavor is mostly barrel and bourbon notes, with mild sweet and earthy notes. Some vanilla, caramel, and booze apparent. Nice, warm. Finishes slightly boozy. Pretty nice.

Draft at FoBAB. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet caramel malts, good citrus and earthy hops, wood, some bourbon, vanilla, some alcohol but it’s not distracting.

Pours amber with creay white head. Sweet caramel, vanilla and deep creamy malt in the nose. Taste is of vanilla, toffee, and very strong malt. Very thick body. Good stuff.

On tap at 2013 GTMW, pours a clear dark brown with an off white head, the aroma was a little sweeter than I was expecting, more dark fruit and caramel than bourbon or oak, the bourbon really comes through on the flavor with a big kick of booze and some vanilla sweetness, not bad.

Great bourbonny smell. The beer is american-styled and it is a booze fest. I don’t think it meshes with the barrel as well as it could.

Sampler pour on tap at the brewery (Mundelein, IL). Pours a richer amber copper pour, gentle haze, bigger rich colors show a brownish amber glow, gentle frothy tannish head sits atop, rings small. Aromas are Woodford: toasted coconut, vanilla, wet oak. Inviting spirit, sticky qualities, and a gentle warmth. Caramel, toffee, a touch sticky with toastiness, nuts. Coconut and telltale Woodford like aromas pervade. Initial is medium bodied, a bit fuller on the palate with some toastiness, sticky caramel, some dark dried fruit. Touch of orange marmalade, biscuits, richer oak flavors show vanilla tannins, wet oak, toasty caramel, gentle toastiness. Gentle warmth from the ABV, a firm body with a lighter age time of 6 months. Backend and finish are gentle dry oak, tannins, and toastiness. Some vanilla, spirit linger. Smooth drinkability, good aging time makes this balanced and rich in flavor. Toasty, a touch buttery at times, but in line. A nice first barrel aged offering from Tighthead that could translate well for them long term. If you see it, try it.
