First let me say "I really like this beer" but something’s going on with it though. One batch is sweeter than the other. Maybe the brewery is fine tuning the recipe? Lately it’s evened out and hasn’t been too sweet. I agree this one can taste a bit thin but only when it’s too cold. Love the deep amber color as well as the big tan head. Best part of this brew is the huge amount of flavor it delivers. Slight caramel and lots of nutiness. Yum! darkko (99), Kingsport, Tennessee, USA

Boy was I surprised! I like this much better! It has a light, frothy head, nice amber color, and a smoooothe taste, with a lingering maltiness. Not quite as bitter as I would prefer. But a great brown ale! I would recommend it to all Newcastle fans! UnsofistaCat (222), Garden City, Michigan, USA

This is the one of the best brown ales I ever had! Rocky tan head. Reddish brown in color. Slight musty raison smell? This is definitely made with some kind of Abbey Ale yeast strain. Mouthful is very creamy. I can see how some may find it a bit too sweet (and even to me it might be), but I’ve never been much of a hop head. And the musty yeast kind of balances it all out. Bitter at the front, malty but musty caramel at the end. A great beer! This is a brown ale for Trappist fans. If only they bittered this one up a notch more. It really is a tad too sweet as I continue to enjoy my sixer. redlight (1509), Winter Park, Florida, USA

Wonderful aroma of malt and bread; dark brown appearance with low foam (but enough is present). Flavor is slightly boozy and very malty. A good regular option for fall, winter and spring. puggy211 (600), cordova, Tennessee, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 17, 2007 33 cl; K27B7 date stamp. Translucent and darkish brown-ruby, with a huge creamy tan foam. Raisins, earthy herbs and dry yeast aromas. Flavors of prunes, grapes, cherries, hints of chocolate; all surrounded by some mellowing dryness and slight bitterness that keeps all the malty flavors from becoming unruly. Palate is medium-bodied, smooth with some acidic tingle and dryness at the end. Seems like a Belgian-style yeast twist on a brown; well done and unique. crondonik (32), California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Mar 10, 2009 Bottled. Pours a reddish brown hue with little sediment. Small off white head is quite thin be sustaning. Aromas of yeast, bananas and sweet malt. Tastes of bananas, candied fruit, maybe banana bread, and has a nice balance of all the essentials.
