COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Oude Gueuze is an appellation controlee : its label is protected. It is also known as the champagne of beers, especially as it is only available as a limited edition. Timmermans Oude Gueuze’s special flavour derives from its time-honoured method of preparation. It is a blend of old lambic, which has been aged for three years in wooden barrels, and young lambic which ensures spontaneous fermentation in the bottle. The different lambics are carefully selected by the brewer to obtain a perfect flavour. After it has been produced, Timmermans Oude Gueuze, which is refermented for four months in the bottle, continues to improve for 20 years.

This was pretty tasty. Certainly on the extreme side of sourness, but without the huge funky aroma some of these have. Nice.

On tap at veronus. Hazy gold body with a thin white head. Particles are present. Smells of coriander, orange, lemon, quite yeasty and funky. Wine-like dry and sour. Warhead candy-type sour.

Bottle (0.750 ml): Pale golden to golden, slowly collapsing loose White head; mainly fresh citric or citrussy flavours in the nose, some vinegar, subdued cellary Aromas; moderate to solid dry sour flavour, barely medium bodied, carbonation still visible; even though very dry, a residual sweetness is detectable in the all in all citric finish. Very good sample...

75cl bottle from Hipercor, Oviedo. 19-02-2014.
In short: tart ale.
Pours hazy straw colour, with some nice white head. Poor head retention, some lacing. Grapy, citrusy, tart aromas. Light body, high carbonation, crispy texture. Taste is tart, grapy, fruity. Very enjoyable.

John Martin has never done much to promote lambic culture after taking over Timmermans, on the contrary I would say, but thanks to the efforts of others, traditional geuze became somewhat more popular in Belgium in recent years and the style seems to be saved from oblivion nowadays; only then, in 2009, John Martin decided to embark on this all but evident style too and came up with this. Limitedly produced and qualifying as an oude geuze in the strict sense of the word, this has a thick cream white head and warm, hazy yellow blonde colour; the aroma has all the lovely lambic funkiness, old sherry, hay, oak, lemon peel, wine vinegar, esters, but strangely some iron as well. Fresh citrus acidity in the onset, rather ’mals’, soft malty and wheaty background, elegant and somewhat subdued lambic character but everything is certainly there, with a long, dry and tart finish. As good as any traditional geuze can be but still a bit too restrained in comparison with the true great ones.

Sampled via bottle at WTWBA 2014. Hazy yellow pour. Tart fruit notes. Lemon. Slight barnyard. Good stuff.
