COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Oude Gueuze is an appellation controlee : its label is protected. It is also known as the champagne of beers, especially as it is only available as a limited edition. Timmermans Oude Gueuze’s special flavour derives from its time-honoured method of preparation. It is a blend of old lambic, which has been aged for three years in wooden barrels, and young lambic which ensures spontaneous fermentation in the bottle. The different lambics are carefully selected by the brewer to obtain a perfect flavour. After it has been produced, Timmermans Oude Gueuze, which is refermented for four months in the bottle, continues to improve for 20 years.

Little cloudy, golden with disappearing white head. Nose: very fruity. Taste has lemon and is very sour (but really sour) with a dry finish. Well carbonated. Very fine Geuze!!

3/3/14. 750mL bottle from Louisville Beer Store. Hazy orange pour with a nice khaki head that fades to a small ring. Funky aroma, nice tartness, lemony and acidic, more funk, plenty of oak, touches of vanilla. Nice flavor, tart, touches of vinegar, citrus, lemon, funk, touches of oak and vanilla, all melds nicely. Yum.

750mL bottle, pours a cloudy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma brings out tart citrus fruit skins, some horse blanket, and funk. Flavour brings out tart citrus fruit skins, low-to-medium funk, and acidic. Finishes acidic, vinegary and tart. This being a Timmerman’s beer, it will be underrated, but this is really quite good.

Sample at Kurtkeller 006: Cascade-tastic 01 on 02/21/2014. This beer pours a hazy straw color with a medium white head that burns away steadily. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of apples, lemons and yeast. Light-bodied with flavors of tart fruit, yeast and oak, as well as a bit of spice. The finish is moderately tart with a fruity aftertaste. Decent overall.

Hazy orange golden with a small white head. Aroma of sour lemons, citrus peel, slight funk. Flavour is similar, nice pungent sourness. I like a little more cellar funk in my Lambic, but the intense tartness makes up for it.

Bottle: Nose is white wine, white grape, slight apple, honey, cellar, dust slight leather in the finish. Taste is very, very tart, green apples, white grape, leading to a surprisingly sweet note in the finish. Mouthfeel is slick despite high carbination. There is not the funky depth of a great oude geuze but this is a good, and certainly the only Timmermans I’ve actively liked.

375 mml bottle tasted on 05/02/2014 in Brussels. Apple dominates all the categories. The carbonation is fine and the balance is good. Next one please.

2012 Bottle. Hazy gold with a head that vanishes straight away. Aroma of damp hay, apricots, lemons, apples. Lowish carbonation, kefir-like texture. Broodingly sour and a bit woody with lemons and apricot kernels, apple skins. Rustic and pretty full on.

375ml bottle. Pours a hazy straw gold, with a smallish white head, which lasts reasonably well, without leaving much lacing. White currants, grape, leather and a strong sourness make up the aroma. A touch of white wine and strong white currant up front lead into a powerfully sour mid-palate. Mild leather and oak mix with the sourness in the finish. This is nice enough, but is perhaps a touch too sour, and certainly not as complex as the best gueuzes.

The beer poured a golden haze with a little head on top. The flavor of the beer is sour with some flowery notes. A great Lambic and one of my favorites. If you like sour beer then you must try.
