Cask quite a few times now. Latest last night. Mmmm. Yep. This is a fine ael. I’ve not always had it in best condition, but when it is it is a blinder. Plays nicely. It shoots and it scores. OK. Citric head on a grainy base. Nice.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Smooth, well balanced and flavoursome beer. Amber coloured, with a good head and lacing. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. Sweet toffee malts and some citrus zest, perfectly offset by the bitterness.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cask, on this occasion in the Black Cat, Chesham. Bright golden amber colour. Solid malty base, lovely hop attack, marmelade, spicy, slightly earthy, not overpowering, moreish bitter. Hops pull through the house yeast flavour, which seems to need the hops, I don’t like say the Golden Best anywhere near as much. One of those beers that no longer tastes as outlandishly flavourful given the increased bitterness and hop quotients used in more recent times, but still retains excellent balance.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cask at the Dove, Hackney. Hazy dark amber / orange, still, decent off-white head leaves some thick lacing. Aroma is sweet toffee, some light citrus. Body is medium, light carbonation, smooth. Taste is smooth toffee malt, semisweet malts are more prominent than hop character, very soft bitterness. A classic, but too malt-heavy for my taste.

4.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
A very fine bitter. Somewhat sharper on the palate than many traditional Yorkshire bitters, and with a good lasting finish. Pleasing caramel colour. One to seek out.
