4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tap at Tired Hands. This is perhaps the first true black IPA. Muddy brown pour with massive tan lace. Nose is fresh pine, blackberry, blueberry, pie, fresher Amarillo floral/citrus hops. No olive, roast, chocolate. Palate is nuts: so clean, long dry birch wood bitterness, mild lemon, muted roast to near zero. No porter or stout character- something different completely. I think Black IPA lovers may be shocked when they try this. Best Black IPA palate wise by a mile. Not as aggressive or dense as Zombie. Easier to enjoy, soft, delicious. Maybe could be described as dark fruit and berry heavy rather than coffee and chocolate.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JAN 19, 2013 On tap at Tired Hands yesterday afternoon. Pours a very dark brown with a nice tan head. Good sticky lacing. The nose carries some mild roast and chocolate underneath a nice bit of piney, resinous hops, as well as a bit of citrus character. Flavor is fairly similar with a nice backing bitterness. A bit of roast and dryness. Really easy to drink.

Growler courtesy of Vinny. Awesome aroma of the fantastic duet - Amarillo and simcoe. Super fresh pine, citrus and resin. Mouthfeel is super fresh pine hop and citrus. Straightforward, but NAILS it home. Cheers Jean.

1 Liter growler from GT2. Black with a thin sudsy cream spotted lace. Nose shows some light pine, citrus, roast, light molasses. Flavor is similar, lots of roast but its not overly bitter like some in the style. Grassy, pine, more roast, light cocoa. Very easy drinking, and seems to me more like a straight black ale than an India black ale or black ipa. Maybe it’s just not as overhopped like some (specifically thinking of TH Zombie) but I kinda like it better like that. Maybe more like a black APA. New style?!!?

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at the brewpub after the Hand Farm release. Poured a very nice looking blac body with a smaller foamy beige head. Aroma of dark roasted ctirus fruits, dark toasted brown bread, light chocolate notes, fresh hop cones. Medium bodied with average carbonation and a chalky finish that slides into a long lingering bitter aftertaste. Flavor is the same as the aroma, notes of dark roasted/burnt citrus fruits, dark brown toast, earth, and cheap chocolate. Great stuff.

dark tan, creamy tan head that lasts. Earthy nose, dusty and piney with considerable wood, like a packing plant, with light skunk. Flavor is very dry, roasted mid with mint and cocoa through the earthy, piney finish. Soft carbonation and full throughout, contrasting most black ipa metallic thinness and over-hopping. Fantastic profile, thanks in part to heavy roast, and probably the best black ipa mouth I’ve had.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours black with a thick, creamy tan head...great retention and lacing. Aroma has nice roastiness...a bit like rye, a hint of black pepper, and lots of pine. Flavor has nice piney/burnt bitterness balanced with roasty malts that hint at rye and bitter chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium and silky with a piney/peppery dry finish.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Growler thanks to GT2!! Rich black pour, beige head. Nose and flavor bring amazing dank spruce and pine character from the Simcoe, loam and earth, and big citric character from the Amarillo as well. Definitely some roasty bitterness to complement the aggressive hop profile. Smooth and delightfully quaffable for a beer with such gigantic flavor. Delicious.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at TH, pours a murky plum borwn color with medium and creamy off white head. Aromas of piney hops, nutty malts, and light cocoa. Taste is a knockout...juicy hops, pine resin, warm cheddar, roasty malt, and bitter cocoa. Medium in body. Really enjoying this brew...Top notch black ipa.

growler shared at Daddy’s tasting - wow this black IPA could pass for a regular IPA if I was blindfolded. Really smooth floral and bright ipa. Hardly even taste the roasted malts. Citrusy and bright, smooth, clean, lip-smacking finish.
