4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500 ml bottle. Pours a nice orange, copper color topped by a huge rocky beige head. Toasted malt nose hints at toffee and buttery biscuits. Lightly carbonated, smooth caramel malt flavor with floral hops in the first sip. Nice balance with some peppery hops and complex maltiness in the finish. A good representive example of the English ESB style.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma is fruit, malts and a mixture of caramel and slightly spicy bread. The flavor is caramel and very nutty, along with malts, fruit and a mildly bitter finish. Kind of different than what I was expecting, the nuttiness and beery flavor made it stand out.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Brown 500ml bottle, best before 8th Apr 2009, drank 2nd Feb 2009.
Poured into a straight UK pint glass.
Dark, deep amber, a browny red colour. On top sat a good firm light tan coloured, foaming head. The head fell away to a thin covering and some lacing around the glass.
The aroma was all about hops and toasted malts, also in the smell I picked up some woody and nutty hints.
Hops and the aforementioned toasted malt dominated the flavours in the taste, with the hops taking centre stage.
The hops also take over the aftertaste, which makes the beer fairly bitter tasting towards the end of the mouthfeel.
One of the hoppiest UK beers I’ve ever had.

Luppolata, rossa con una presenza nel sapore di toffee, caramello e prugna. Non male, anzi una buona birra.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
First tasted this in Coanes, Johnstone in August 1992. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear russet in colour with a thick creamy white head. Strong aroma of fruity malt in the long nose. Creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. throughout. Pale malt gives a fiery digestive biscuit base with toffee and raisin fruit noted. Good smack of dusty hops present in the metallic aftertaste which is long in intensity. Finish is slightly dry and moreish with malt and currant fruit full in abundance. A robust and decent ESB, quite powerful for 5.2% and punches above its weight.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
500ml bottle. Pours copper with a brown leaning and tan head that leaves a slight lace. Spicy/earthy hops on the nose with a nice caramelness. Lots of the same on the palate with a finish that seems to switch back and forth between bitter and sweet. Solid session ale.

Cask-conditioned at the Wellington, Horfield 15/02/2012. Medium brown with a slight, off-white head. Berry fruit and caramel aroma with a touch of leafy hop. Flavour had more sweetness, some bready malts and a decent bitter finish. Enjoyable on a winter evening.
