For centruies, alchemists toiled to turn base materials into gold - but brewers managed it by accident. Golden ale came about when brewers forgot to add dark roasted malt to their beer, producing a light, easy-drinking ale thatís the perfect introduciton to real ale. Ok, so it might be more science than hocus pocus - but itís a light, refreshing taste thatís pure magic.

Bottle at home in London - picked up at Morissons. Pours perfectly clear gold with a frothy, white head. The aroma has crunchy cereal, sourdough bread, grains. Light-medium sweet flavor with further grains and cereal, minor bitter hay, sugary white bread. Light bodied with average carbonation. Simple and sweet on the finish with some grassy bitterness, dry hay, white sugar, white bread, straw. So so.

Bottled 08/06/14. A golden coloured beer with a bright white head. Soapy and sharp hops in the nose. High bitterness in the mouth. Good hops. Tinny notes and a bit of caramel let it down though. Itís OK.

Bottle, from Morrisons. Gold, fluffy and sustained white head and good condition. Gentle chalky mineral note initially in the nose, with some muted malt sweetness coming through with time. Gentle hop bitterness is dominant in the mouth, with some grainy malt notes and a chalky mouthfeel, the finish has a brief sweetness but a lingering hop bitterness lingers longer.

Dusted orange retaining a firm pocked white collar. Aroma initially metallic with improving marmalade and chopped herb intimations peeking through. Soft mineral tones and creamy malt underpinning vaguely juicy orange hop. Hints of coriander and meat cordial. Neat, sorry. Thick mouthfeel. Better than feared. Much better.

Bottle from Morrisonís. Served cellar cool in a San Miguel glass. Dark gold with a firm white rocky head Good looking beer. Set honey and cereal aroma. First mouthful is resinous bitterness, then dried fruit, then the bitterness comes back and asserts itself, and this argument goes on until some cinder toffee comes along to help out the fruit. I was prepared to be disparaging at the beginning, but was definitely won over by the end. Good example of the stuyle

Bottle from Morrisons drank at home. Gold clear lasting off white head. Some hop and citrus on the aroma. I thought this was fine. Itís what is now thought of a regular beer in the UK. Slightly citrusy hoppy slightly bitter. Itís clean and fine. Light and refreshing and I thought ok. I was happy to drink this.

500ml dark glass bottle from Morrisons. The best of the Morrisons specially selected range that I have yet experienced. Yellow amber colour. Clean and neutral. Floral, soapy, mildly citric hops. Drinkable and reasonably pleasant, though somewhat below Titanicís normal offerings.
