1.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20
Cask gravity at the Watford Beer Festival 2014. Poured a clear amber, with a rocky off white head. Aroma of fruit salad sweets, caramel and cooked fruit. Flavours were a total mess of spice, grass, Xmas pudding, grain and copper. Finish was toffee, malt and unripe fruit. Absolute overkill.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 22 Nov 2013) Dark reddish amber colour with brief, beige head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of caramel, dried fruit, orange peel and a touch of cinnamon. Malty, fruity taste with caramel, dried fruit, orange peel, citrus, hints of cinnamon and a sweet, vinous finish with a generous spicy bitterness. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Complex, tasty and quite strong, but still in excellent balance. Lovely beer!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle shared at the Craft Beer Co. - Clerkenwell, London Holiday Tasting - thanks to me, lover of ESA. Pours clear copper with a tight, tan cream head. Dry brown bread nose, some toasted brown sugars, dried fruits. Medium sweet flavor with dry brown bread, bitter leaves, light cocoa, some dirt. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Moderately sweet finish, lightly sticky, some earthy and leafy bitterness, rich and well toasted whole grain bread. Not bad, actually.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
500ml bottle. Reddish copper shade with a good amount of head. Aroma features caramel, vanilla and red fruit notes. Described as a "liquid Christmas cake" but I wouldn’t go that far. The taste is caramel malty and not overly sweet. Seems a bit boring to me, but then I prefer my Christmas beers to have an obvious Christmassy taste.

Clear mid brown with a thin off white head that soon bades farewell and heads to the edge of the glass.
Nose is toffee, touch of booze, wood, dark fruits, raisens.
Taste follows, dark toffee, sugars, dark fruits, malt.
Medium bodied with bite, smooth on the palate, soft carbonation.
Not being a lover of the ubiqitous ’Christmas Ale’ I was pleasantly surprised by this one - not bad at all !
