3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Madtown1 (13) - Wisconsin, USA - NOV 10, 2011On tap at the Malthouse here in Madison...the color was dark brown, almost black/brown. The head was off white and reduced rather quickly to a ring and film, but left some lacing on the glass. The aroma was roasted coffee and some chocolate notes too a lesser degree. The flavor was a smooth malt, a bit of sweetness, and mild bitterness coupled with a moderate roasty dry finish.

Light roasty, slight hop bitterness. Thin but not too thin. Once it warms a bit chocolate comes thru.

On tap at the Old Fashioned. Dark brown/black. Light coffee/roasted malt, soft Munich-type malts, brown sugar, and toffee. Flavor is a slightly acidic roast-type flavor that doesn’t round out well. Fairly light on the palate with trailing mild roast finish.

Dark black/brown pour in sampler glass. Nice aroma of coffee and chocolate. Coffee and chocolate flavors with a smooth finish. One of my favorites from my visit to Titletown.

Thirsty Troll Beer Fest. Pour is deep brown with an off-white head. Aroma shows notes of chocolate and moderately roasted coffee beans. Flavor shows sweet caramel with more roasted presence and a touch of earthy hops. Pretty much no smoke to be found. As it warms there seems to be a hint of smoke, but it’s so faint that I could be imagining it. This was served way too cold and doesn’t much remind me of a schwarz, more like a thin porter.
