33cl bottle. Black colour with small/medium brown head. Full bodied and average carbonated. Aroma is a mix of wood, alcohol and hints of roasted malts. Those malts are more evident regarding taste, with some chocolate notes and a slightly bitter aftertaste. I find it too soft for a beer like this, but it’s not bad.

Bottle (33cl) from Vinmonopolet, Oslo. Half-inch dark beige head, good retention. Black colour. Aroma of roasted malt, smokey wood, lactose, licorice, coffee, hint of acetone. Medium body, soft carbonation. Bitter-sweet taste with a well-blended acidity - excellent balance. Increasing dryness culminating in a tongue-dryingly bitter finish.

Bottle. MHT 11.01.13. Black with beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, a hint of smoke and coffee. Flavour is sweet with dark, roasted malts and chocolate, a little salami and a good burned bitter finish. Good palate as well. Very nice. Aging did this well.

Appearance- very dark, opaque, a big frothy light brown head which leaves some lacing. Aroma- milk chocolate, coffee beans, dark toasted malt, coffee milkshake, tobacco smoke, treacle toffee, toasted teacake. Taste- yum. Bitter chocolate and loads of dark coffee to begin with. Burnt caramel, roast malts, honey-coated burnt toast, liqueur chocolates. Clinging bitter finish, with more burnt malts and espresso coffee. Mouthfeel is thick, smooth and velvety, seems bigger than 8%. Delicious.

Bottle from trade with Guillaume S. last summer. Aroma: lots of cheap chocolate, subtle citrus, roasted malt, smokey. App: pitch black with medium frothy moka head and great lacing. Taste and palate: full body, creamy, medium sweetness, light bitter and smokey finish. Overall: didn’t think the nose was really inviting initially but got used to it and enjoyed it. Good smoothness, good balance, good sweet desert.

[Coincidence: this beer’s 555th rating, here on X-Mas Eve 2015.] Bottle. Nose luscious, huge chocolate and heavy dark roast, strong coffee as well. Definite fruitiness with malt sweetness, plum and berry. Pitch pour with a dense and cream brown head. Watery-thin body in the mouth with medium bitterness, utterly bone-dry with strong and lasting smoke, lighter char and scorch, great and unrelenting dark roast, coffee, dark chocolate, classic brown malt. Love the brutal ardor, dry and even moreish (!) with mild background fruit for balance, rounded mild hoppiness mostly in earthiness, hint of ash with the smoke. Very mild mineral character and a touch of husk in the finish; there’s something distinctly Scandinavian about this, even though it was brewed in Belgium -- I immediately thought Nøgne Ø, then Mikkeller. Sticky lips. I’d desire it a touch thicker, but that’s quibbling; there’s a light creaminess which befits the smoke and would complement vanilla quite well -- it’s hard for me not to imagine the pairing. No trace of alcohol whatsoever. Super classy and easy-going, the beast you can bring home for dinner. [2015.12.24: 4.5]

neongolden (1012) - Linköping, Sweden/Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - DEC 9, 2015
(330ml bottle shared @ VilleValla Pub, Linköping, Nov 27 2015) Pours black with a pale brown head lingering with lace. Aroma has smoky, roasty dark malts and piney hops. Palate is very smoky, dry and ashy dark malt and a lot of leafy, piney hops with a bit of resin. Finish is super smoky and medium bitter with dry roast and a supply of pine forward hops. Medium body with above average carb. Basically all about and hops, I admit I was expecting a fuller, richer body from the grain bill. Felt a little lacking in punch.
