De color ben negre amb una escuma cafetera. Aroma de xocolata torrat i notes de cafè. En boca és ben bé el mateix. Bon equilibri entre la xocolata dolça, el pi i petites dosis de fum i fusta, tabac i un final llarg.

Bottle. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, roasted malt, cascadian hops, caramel. Sweet with bitter ending, roasted malt and coffee dominate the flavour with dark chocolate hints and a slightly hoppy ending. A bit smoky. Cross between a porter and a black IPA. Neat!

Bottle at home from Beer Shop St albans. £4.50 Aroma is sweet fruits, piney hops, chalky ashy clean roast. Opaque black coloured pour with a lasting dark tan head. Nose develops a bit more, with some wood and leather. Flavour is big juicy hops, pine and ashy dry roasted coffee. Very nice clean ferment and hides the alcohol pretty well. Long lingering bitter roast and piney hops. Palate is semi-full and with high slightly abrasive carbonation. Really good black IPA. (should be a black IPA at least. )

Look: Pours with creamy, thick, large mocha head. Slow retention, leaves a thick layer. Lots of random but fine lacing when coming down. Very dark brown, ok, black, can’t see through.

Smell: The usual milky chocolate, roast medium sweetness with dry fruits (dates mostly) and light boozy character. Oak and vanilla with some acidity come in to mix things up.

Taste: Starts with good medium sweet dark malt backbone. Good smooth milky transition to medium bitterness, made mostly with strong dark coffee and a bit less strong roast. Fresh cognac, vanilla, oak spike towards the end, dark coffee dominates the after. Also some hops pop up in the end bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Full medium heavy body, creamy.

Overall: A solid beer, creamy but still hides a few punches to spice things up. Go for it.

Bottle. Pitch black with a creamy-looking tan head. The aroma has notes of burnt malt, chocolate, and grassy, grapefruity hops. The flavour is quite hoppy with grapefruit and pine, some more passionfruit-pineapple notes, becoming reasonably bitter with roast malt acidity and smokiness taking over. The body is medium (I had hoped it might actually be a little thicker) and has a nice silky texture.

Bottle 33 cl. Black with a nice foamy light brown head. Aroma of chocolate, licorice, dark fruits and roasted malt. Medium bitter, light sweet with a longer nice chocolate end. Nice

Brilliant beer! The smokey aroma bursts out the glass followed by strong dark chocolate aromas. Has converted me to beers using smoked malts.

Bottle from emporium. Pours a dark black with a tan head which lasts. Good lacing. Aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, liquorice and pine. A very rich taste with strong coffee and pine. Quite an oily mouth feel.

Complex porter from a brewery in Kopenhagen, brewed with three American hops, four malt varieties including smoked malt, roasted barley and oat flakes. Deeply beige, mousse-like, thick, stable foam, colour completely black without any light shining through. Aroma malty, less strong than I expected, sourish and fruity notes, coffee grounds, fondant, liquorice, hazelnuts, sherry, cloves, dates, vanilla, grassy hops. Full and complex taste nonetheless, rich malt base with dark chocolate, caramel, nuts, coffee, thick and oily mouthfeel, herbal tones, citrussy and peppery hoppiness spreading out over back of tongue and throat supported by roasted bitterness (’cold coffee’), some warming alcohol further adding to the experience. Very complex and interesting beer, although I still fail to see the use of the term ’imperial porter’ instead of good-old ’imperial stout’.
