sebletitje (6341) - Enghien, BELGIUM - JAN 13, 2014

375 ml. bottle poured in to a tulip. Black with a big, tanned head that fades to a thick cap. Roasted aroma with chocolate, coffee, grapefruits and fruits. The chardonnay shows as wood and tannins. Taste is bitter. Medium to full body, creamy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes roasted and bitter with fruity hops. The barrel aging in this beer is rather subtle, but the white grapes and barrel shows.

Bottle from Mane liquor. Pours dark brown with a small, lace driven head. Nose is full of vanilla oak, wood, light ash, pine and citric rind. Taste is vanilla forward, a touch buttery, woody and dirty in a good way with big piney hops. A great black IPA but would have liked to have seen more barrel focus

HopRedHead (322) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - DEC 26, 2013
Bottle from Mane Liquor Gallery of Beer. Pours pitch black with an off-white head and heavy lacing. Upfront aroma of coffee, resin and a bit of lemon zest on the back. First taste isn’t too dissimilar to the original Black Maria, however a sweet lemon meringue note lingers at the back of the palate on the way down. Adds a nice dry zest from the chardonnay barrels. Bitterness is well balanced.

olio (5278) - Tampere, FINLAND - DEC 14, 2013
375 ml bottle.
Pours black color with an outstanding beige head, seems quite dense too. Aroma has obviously the hops and the roasted malts, there’s also cocoa, dark chocolate and even some vanilla in it, quite nice aroma overall, although there is a slight "this is going to be watery" feel to it.. Flavor has roasted malts and resinous hops too, subtle wooden notes with vanilla and caramel rounding things up nicely and even the chardonnay is there. Chocolaty and somewhat fluffy palate and not as watery as I feared. Not the best of Black IPAs I’ve tasted, but very tasty anyway. I like the rostiness and dryness though.

lusikka (5341) - Tampere, FINLAND - DEC 13, 2013
375 ml bottle.
Pours a black colour with a white chunky head. Aroma of mudcake, baking powder, bitter chocolate and grass. Rich flavour of roasted malts, mudcake, chocolate, grassy bitterness, mango, burnt chocolate cookies and some white grapes. Medium bodied, thick mouthfeel and a long, lingering bitter, roasty finish. Barrel is quite well hidden here.
