Style:BA Black DIPA
Malts:Pilsner, Flaked Oat, Munich, Cara Pils, Black Malt, Chocolate, Roasted Barley
Hops:Columbus, bobek, Centennial

Barrel aged on Chardonnay Barrels. Black Maria is an American inspired Black IPA. It is black as an stout and hoppy as an IPA. The beer has been brewed with a good amount of highly roasted Carafa Malts, but with a relatively low amount of caramel and chocolate malts. This way we get the burned bitter and delicate chocolate notes in the beers, that goes well with the bitter and fruity aromas of the hops. The lack of caramel and chocolate results in less residual sweetness that you normally pick up from an Stout. For the hops we wanted some hops that could stand up against the Carafa malts. Therefore we used a mix of Columbus, Centennial, Galaxy and Cascade for the hop profile.

Words from our label designer Kasper about the label:
The label shows the inner yard of the Copenhagen Police Yard folded out on 4 pictures with a quote and a name merged together. The shitty tree on the neck-wrap stands in contrast to the main labels monumental expression. The police is as fake as the quality of the wood. The label is dedicated to police commander Bjarne.

shared bottle, poured dark black with a tan head. a lot of chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, roasted malts, hop bitter, strong red fruits, very balanced black ipa. but i can’t pick up the chardonay BA, it doesn’t compare with the chocolate tones

Tap. Pours deep brown to black with a large, beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee notes, citrus hops and a hint of wood. Slightly sweey flavor that ends up dry and nice bitter. Medium bodied, creamy to oily text. and soft to average carb. A very nice Black IPA.

11-APR-2014, draft @Mikkeller & Friends. Black with lasting, creamy, tan head. Aroma is roast, burnt, coffee, grape fruit, pine. Taste the same. Very bitter from hops and roast. On the roasted side. Medium body+, medium carbonation but turns a Little thin on the finish. Perhaps not thin for an IPA but as this has the taste profile of a hoppy porter, it comes out on the thin side. Not as good as the regular. There are som dry Wood notes that I am not all that fond of. But apart from that barrel aging is far from dominant.

Bottle, thanks fonefan! Pours dark black with a very large brown puffy head that dissipates very slowly leaving nice lacing in the glass. Aroma is roasted malt, pine, citrus, a bit of vinous note. Flavor is roasty, pine, some citrus, not much barrel really, light sweet, medium bitter. Medium body, a bit creamy. Lingering bitterness and some astringence. A bit hot.

Tap @ Mikkeller, Stefansgade. Black with a lasting light brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt, wood and moderate hoppy - citrus. Flavor is quite sweet and rather bitter. Dry and rather bitter finish. 120414

draught@Erzbierschof - black beer under a robust and long lasting dark beige foam; very roasted mocha aroma, hints of ashes and nuts, light woody; rounded sweet maltiness, very earthy and hugely bitter; notes oflicorice, wood and black chocolate, tar, walnuts and a hint of fruitiness - complex and pretty aggressive, very interesting

Pours a dark brown with decent head that lingers for a while. Good lacing. Aroma is hoppy and some hints of fruits. Alcohol is not present although it’s there. Also some hints of the Chardonnay are present. Body is slightly sweet with hints of chocolate and coffee. Aftertaste is very strong hoppy bitterness that ends quite quickly. A very tasty and well balanced Black IPA.

Flaske,375 ml. Brunsort, cremet lysebrunt skum. Dufter heftigt af vådt træ. Og let sødlig mørk chokolade. Chardonnay. Salt-lakrids. Cola-frugt? Fyldig, hårdtristet og bitter. Træ. Trods fadet og de ristede noter stadig en black ipa. Og overraskende nok næsten bedre end originalen. Ren meditation.

Amazing black ipa. A real grower. Beautiful roasted smell. Some nice light fruits appear. First taste bitter - tropical fruits - heavy yet light. Easy drinkable. Demands more. The roasted malts settle in an amazing marriage with the fruits. Amazing! ---Rated via Beer Buddy (iOs)
