Amazing black ipa. A real grower. Beautiful roasted smell. Some nice light fruits appear. First taste bitter - tropical fruits - heavy yet light. Easy drinkable. Demands more. The roasted malts settle in an amazing marriage with the fruits. Amazing! ---Rated via Beer Buddy (iOs)

Flaske,375 ml. Brunsort, cremet lysebrunt skum. Dufter heftigt af vådt træ. Og let sødlig mørk chokolade. Chardonnay. Salt-lakrids. Cola-frugt? Fyldig, hårdtristet og bitter. Træ. Trods fadet og de ristede noter stadig en black ipa. Og overraskende nok næsten bedre end originalen. Ren meditation.

375ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a large light tan head, which lasts well and leaves good lacing. Pine needle and grapefruit hops mix with soft toffee, black coffee and a touch of oak to create the aroma. Prickling pine needle and grapefruit hops up front give way to roasty malt and black coffee in the mid-palate. Bitter cocoa leads into dry, slightly spicy chardonnay in the finish. This is a very nice, complex black IPA, highly enjoyable. Kudos for the Clash reference too.

draught@Erzbierschof - black beer under a robust and long lasting dark beige foam; very roasted mocha aroma, hints of ashes and nuts, light woody; rounded sweet maltiness, very earthy and hugely bitter; notes oflicorice, wood and black chocolate, tar, walnuts and a hint of fruitiness - complex and pretty aggressive, very interesting

Pours a dark brown with decent head that lingers for a while. Good lacing. Aroma is hoppy and some hints of fruits. Alcohol is not present although it’s there. Also some hints of the Chardonnay are present. Body is slightly sweet with hints of chocolate and coffee. Aftertaste is very strong hoppy bitterness that ends quite quickly. A very tasty and well balanced Black IPA.

Tap @ Mikkeller & Friends, Köpenhamn 14/9. Smaken kommer efter ett litet tag, men vilken smak! Kaffe, choklad, rostade toner. God.

Bottle from Mane Liquor Gallery of Beer. Pours pitch black with an off-white head and heavy lacing. Upfront aroma of coffee, resin and a bit of lemon zest on the back. First taste isn’t too dissimilar to the original Black Maria, however a sweet lemon meringue note lingers at the back of the palate on the way down. Adds a nice dry zest from the chardonnay barrels. Bitterness is well balanced.

Bottle. Black with a thick creamy light brown head. Good retention and lace. Fruity and hoppy nose with some bark/wood as well. Flavor has lots of hard roasted notes but is also quite hoppy. Lasting roasted notes in the finish, hoppy bitterness, dry. Some sweetness but overall on the bitter side. It’s been a while since I had the original, but it doesn’t strike me as very fra from it. Very nice beer anyway.

Look: Pours with fantastic, huge, creamy, solid mocha head. Slow retention. Big, thick layer stays on top, leaves lots of lacing. Dark, dark brown, some carbonation visible. It puts a lot of imperial stouts to shame (on the other hand, it basically is an imp stout).

Smell: Immediately fills the room with some dark, fruity, vinous notes, tempting. Closer analysis of the smell reveals sweet roasted, milk chocolate, toffee malts combined with fresh hop notes, mostly tropical, light citrus (grapefruit) and some pine, oak combo at the end. A complex bland that somehow works very well. The malt character is well developed for the style.

Taste: At start it is the classical IPA story, fruit, grapefruit and pine hops with some toffee but the medium malt soon comes running in. It’s relatively strong, medium intensity sweetness, solid and consists of roasted and chocolate notes. It continues into relatively sharp, medium roasted, chocolaty (and a bit of coffee) bitterness with some pine and grapefruit hop bitterness combined. Both stay with you for a while, pine notes the longest. With pine lingers the oak character, grows with time.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body, carbonation is suiting. Dry finish. Good sipper. Missing some of the creaminess.

Overall: Haven’t tried the non barrel version, but this one was a pleasant surprise. Malt character is well developed and works well with the hop notes. Overall end bitterness is maybe a bit too sharp but still a well developed idea, would drink it again.
